Ohio Softball Falls in MAC Opener at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. –  The Ohio softball team (12-14, 0-2 MAC) opened Mid-American Conference play on Saturday afternoon (March 16) against Ball State (15-13, 2-0 MAC), falling to the Cardinals 7-5 in game one, and 5-0 in game two. 
 
GAME ONE: Ball State 7 Ohio 5
Overall, Ohio scored five runs on seven hits and committed four errors, while Ball State scored seven runs on five hits and did not commit an error. 
 
Individually, senior Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led Ohio, going 2-for-3 with two homeruns, five RBI and two runs scored, while senior Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) added two hits and a run scored. Sophomore Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio) and junior CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) both recorded hits and scored runs for Ohio. 
 
In the circle, redshirt sophomore Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching six innings, allowing seven runs, one earned, while walking four and striking out six. 
 
The Bobcats got the first baserunner of the game after O'Brien led the game off with a single to left, however, Ball State got on the board first in the bottom of the first with a homerun to right, giving the Cardinals the early 1-0 lead. 
 
Ohio responded in the top of the third inning. After Austy Miller reached on a leadoff single, she moved to second when Keidel reached on a bunt single. Then with one out, Logan crushed her own homerun to right field, giving the Bobcats the 3-1 lead after three innings of play. 
 
Ball State cut the Ohio lead to one in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-2. However, Ohio responded in the top of the fifth inning, when Logan hit her second homerun of the game, this time a two-run shot to center, giving Ohio a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the fifth. 
 
Ball State got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of a leadoff double and a two-out fielding error from the Bobcats to cut the Ohio lead to 5-3 going into the sixth inning. 
 
Ball State took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four runs on one hit and one error, capping the inning off with a three-run homerun to give the Cardinals the 7-5 lead going into the top of the seventh. 
 
Unfortunately, the Bobcats were unable to rally in the top of the seventh inning, falling by the final of 7-5. 
 
GAME TWO: Ball State 5, Ohio 0 
Overall, Ohio did not score a run on four hits, while committing two errors, while Ball State scored five runs on eight hits and did not commit an error. 
 
Individually, Logan had a double, while O'Brien, freshman Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) and senior Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) both had base hits for the Bobcats. 
 
In the circle, freshman Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start, pitching four innings, allowing five runs on six hits. Junior Ellie Greene (Attica, Mich.) pitched two innings and did now allow a run on two hits, while striking out two. 
 
Just as in game one, O'Brien led the game off with a single, however was unable to score, sending the game to the bottom of the first still tied at 0-0. 
 
Ball State struck first in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 3-0 lead on a three-run homerun. The Cardinals added on in the bottom of the third, scoring two more runs to take a 5-0 lead into the fourth inning. 
 
The Ohio offense attempted to get a run on the board in the top of the seventh. After Logan led the inning off with a double to right, she moved to third on a single from Wilson, however, Ohio was unable to capitalize, falling by the final of 5-0.

The Bobcats wrap up the three-game series with ball State on Sunday, March 17. First pitch is set for Noon.
