KENT, Ohio – Ohio Wrestling wrapped the 2024 Mid-American Conference Championships this afternoon (Mar. 9), with Peyten Kellar claiming the Bobcats first individual MAC Championship since 2017. Kellar also earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler award, while Jordan Greer placed third in the heavyweight division, punching his ticket to the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career.
As a team, the Bobcats placed sixth with 82.0 points. Central Michigan took home the team title, edging out Rider and George Mason with 131.0 points.
Redshirt sophomore Peyten Kellar (Cutler, Ohio) claimed his first MAC Championship, defeating George Mason's DJ McGee with a 2-0 decision. Kellar ended his perfect weekend as a champion, recording three wins by fall on Friday (Mar. 8) and closing out his performance with the title. Kellar will be returning to the NCAA Championships for the second time in his career.
Also punching his ticket to Kansas City is senior Jordan Greer (Avon, Ohio). Greer made quick work of George Mason's Donovan Sprouse in the consolation semifinals, taking the win by way of a technical fall. Ohio's heavyweight kept his momentum going, taking care of business against Central Michigan's Bryan Caves with a 10-1 major decision. The third-place finish was enough to send Greer to the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career.
At 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Garrett Thompson (Murrysville, Pa.) was unable to take home the title against George Mason's Evan Maag. Thompson and Maag were in a tight battle until Maag got the pin in the second period. Thompson placed second overall in the division.
In the 174-pound division, junior Sal Perrine (Northfield, Ohio) advanced to the third-place match with a major decision win over Lock Haven's Tyler Stoltzfus. In the third-place match, Perrine faced Clarion's John Worthing. Perrine put up a strong fight, but was unable to get the decision over Worthing.
Redshirt freshman Derek Raike (Point Pleasant, W. Va.) opened his day in the consolation semifinals. He knocked off Kent State's Matthew Ryan with an 11-2 major decision, before narrowly falling to NIU's Jaivon Jones in a 5-4 decision. Raike would move on to the fifth-place match, however was unable to beat Kaden Cassidy of George Mason.
Junior Zayne Lehman (Akron, Ohio) placed seventh in the 184-pound weight class. He lost in the consolation quarterfinals to NIU's Matt Zuber, but was able to bounce back in the seventh-place match. He defeated Rider's Isaac Dean with an 8-1 decision to claim seventh in the division.
While Kellar and Greer have punched their tickets to Kansas City for the NCAA Championships, their teammates will have to wait until Wednesday (Mar. 13) at 8:00 p.m. ET for the NCAA's Selection Show. There will be 47 at large bids given out at the Selection Show; six at 125, five at 133, six at 141, four at 149, four at 157, five at 165, four at 174, five at 184, and four at both 197 and in the heavyweights. In addition to the at large bids, seeding will also be provided on the show.
The NCAA Championships will take place from Thursday (Mar. 21) to Saturday (Mar. 23) in Kansas City, Missouri. For more information on the NCAA Championships, follow this link.
