ATHENS, Ohio — The Ohio baseball team (4-6) defeated Youngstown State (0-10) to the tune of 21-19 Tuesday night (March 5) after it combined for 16 runs in the third and fourth innings.
All it took was four hits for Ohio to match Youngstown State's 10 runs in the third inning. Ohio's first three runs came on a pair of walks to freshman Trae Cassidy (Northville, Mich.) and fifth year Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.), along with a free base to senior Clay Cutter (Centennial, Colo.) after he was hit by pitch. The next came on a triple from graduate student Bryce Smith, a single from freshman JR Nelson (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and senior Gideon Antle's first home run of the day.
The Bobcats continued the trend in the fourth inning as they batted through the order for the second inning in a row. They broke through with six runs in the fourth inning to take the lead — half of which came on Antle's second three-run home run of the night. Antle ended the night with eight RBIs and led the team with four hits.
Antle wasn't the only Bobcat to record multiple hits, either. Nelson and Smith both had two hits, along with Cassidy, who was in his first career start. Tuesday marked Smith's second consecutive game with multiple hits.
Ohio's overall patience at the plate was on display Tuesday night as it collected 17 walks. Finney led the charge with four, followed by redshirt junior AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) and junior Taylor Gill (Orem, Utah) who each had three. Cutter and Cassidy also collected multiple with a pair each.
On the mound, Ohio turned to senior Luke Olson (Granville, Ill.) to start the game. Olson allowed three runs on two hits and two walks, and stuck out three batters in an inning of work. Sophomore Landon Price (Middle Point, Ohio) took over in the bottom of the second before graduate student Carson Denham (Cape May Court House, N.J.) relieved him in the during the top of the third inning.
Winning pitcher Adam Beery (Ravenna, Ohio) earned his first win of the season on Tuesday. He came in at the start of the top of the fourth inning and tossed three innings, the most of Ohio's pitchers. Beery allowed one run on two hits and struck out three batters.
Redshirt junior Patrick Straub (Naperville, Ill.) tossed two innings in which he struck out two batters before freshman Jack Geiser (Medina, Ohio) closed off the top of the ninth.
Ohio is set to be back at Bob Wren Stadium on Friday (March 8) for the first game of a three-game series against Northern Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
