OXFORD, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (13-16, 1-4 MAC) returned to action Friday (March 22) for the first two games of a three-game series at Miami inside the Miami Softball Stadium. The Bobcats dropped the first game to the RedHawks (21-6, 5-0 MAC), 10-4, before falling, 16-13, in a high-scoring game two.
GAME ONE: Miami 10, Ohio 4
Overall, Ohio scored four runs on seven hits and did not commit an error, while Miami scored 10 runs on 12 hits and did not commit an error.
Individually, senior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with a triple and RBI, while senior
Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) added a hit, walk and two runs scored. Junior
Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) added two hits and a run scored, while sophomore
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) hit a homerun and recorded an RBI and a run scored.
In the circle, redshirt sophomore
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching six innings, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, while walking five and striking out three.
The Ohio bats opened the first game of the series on fire. After O'Brien, Yuhas and Logan all reached base on three-straight singles to load the bases with no outs, Ohio would get the first run on the board after junior
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) was hit by a pitch, scoring O'Brien. Moments later, freshman
Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) drew a bases loaded walk, giving Ohio the early 2-0 lead.
Miami cut the Ohio lead in half in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on an RBI double. The Bobcats got the run back in the top of the second on an RBI triple from Logan, before taking a 4-1 lead in the top of the third after Westler hit a leadoff homerun.
Miami took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 5-4 lead into the fourth inning. The RedHawks added on in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on two homeruns to take an 8-4 lead into the sixth inning. The RedHawks would go on to add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, increasing their lead to 10-4 going into the final frame.
The Bobcats came to bat in the top of the seventh, but were unable to generate enough offense to rally, falling by the final of 10-4.
GAME TWO: Miami 16, Ohio 13
Overall, Ohio scored 13 runs on 17 hits and committed two errors, while Miami scored 16 runs on 15 hits and did not commit an error.
Individually, O'Brien went 3-for-4 with two runs score, followed by Westler with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Hoffner added three hits, three runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore
Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio) recorded two doubles and five RBI. Farmer added two hits and two RBI, while Yuhas recorded two hits, one double, one RBI and two runs scored.
Just as in game one, the Bobcats struck first in the top of the first, scoring three runs on four hits, including an RBI single from Hoffner to give Ohio an early 3-0 lead. However, Miami responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring 10 runs on six hits to take a 10-3 lead after one inning of play.
The Bobcats cut into the RedHawks lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Logan recorded another RBI, while moments later, Westler singled and
Austy Miller doubled, cutting the Miami lead to 10-7 going into the bottom of the innings.
Miami got two runs back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on two hits to take the 12-7 lead. After Ohio left two runners on in the top of the third, Miami added on in the bottom of the third and fourth, taking a 15-7 lead into the fifth inning.
The Bobcats extended the game in the top of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on six hits, with the inning highlighted by
Austy Miller's second RBI double of the game, cutting the Ohio deficit to 15-12 going into the bottom of the fifth.
After the RedHawks took a 16-12 lead, Ohio cut the deficit to three runs in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Logan, bringing the Bobcats within reach going into the seventh inning. Unfortunately, the Ohio offense was unable to finish the comeback, falling by the final of 16-13.
