CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Ohio Softball (11-5) opened their four-game slate at the Governor's Classic by taking on IUPUI today (Mar. 1). The Bobcats started the weekend with a resounding win, taking down the Panthers 15-2 in five innings.
It was an offensive showcase for Ohio with every Bobcat in the lineup picking up at least one hit. Ohio totaled their 15 runs on 13 hits while recording an error. The Panthers scored their two runs on six hits while recording five errors defensively.
Individually, freshman Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) got the Bobcats on the board early, hitting the second grand slam of the season for Ohio. Wilson had a career high with four RBI on the day while also drawing a walk. Junior Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) also had a career high four RBI on the day, with an RBI single and a three-run home run. Sophomore Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio) also reached a career high in RBI with two after her double in the fourth inning.
In the circle, freshman Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) earned the fourth win of her career. Lieving pitched all five innings, striking out three while allowing just two runs.
The Bobcats jumped out to an emphatic lead behind Wilson's first inning grand slam. Freshman Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) added another to make it 5-0 after the first inning with a single into right center. In the second inning, Hoffner picked up her first RBI with a single into center to grow Ohio's lead to six.
IUPUI would get two runs on the board in the bottom of the third behind a pair of fielder's choice RBI.
Ohio would respond in the top of the fourth with Hoffner's three-run home run over the center field fence. A few batters later, Miller grew the lead to nine with a double into right center. The Bobcats would enter the bottom of the fourth inning with an 11-2 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Bobcats added four more runs. A single from Farmer would lead to four runs and a 15-2 lead after a throwing error from the Panthers. Ohio would close out the game in the fifth inning, recording three outs in quick succession.
Ohio will return to action tomorrow (Mar. 2) for a double-header. The Bobcats will first play at 11:00 a.m. against Indiana State before facing off against Saint Louis at 1:30 p.m.
