CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Ohio softball team (11-7) continued play at the 2024 Governor's Classic hosted by Austin Peay on Saturday (March 2). The Bobcats fell to Indiana State (10-7) in game one, 5-2, before falling to St. Louis (9-4) in the second game, 1-0.
GAME ONE: Indiana State 5, Ohio 2
Overall, Ohio scored two runs on five hits and committed two errors, while Indiana State scored five runs on 10 hits and committed two errors.
Individually, senior
Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while junior
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) added a triple and an RBI. Sophomore
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) had a double and a run scored, while senior
Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) added a sacrifice fly and an RBI.
In the circle, freshman
Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va.) got the start, pitching six innings, allowing five run, four earned, on 10 hits, while walking one and striking out five.
After both teams stranded runners in the first inning, Ohio struck in the top of the second. After Westler doubled to lead off the inning, she would move to third and then score on a sacrifice fly from Grein, giving the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead.
Indiana State took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on four hits and capitalizing on tow Ohio errors to take the 2-1 lead. Indiana State added on in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two more runs on four hits, taking a 4-1 lead entering the top of the sixth inning.
After Indiana State took a 5-1 lead off a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth, Ohio looked to rally in the top of the seventh. After O'Brien reached first on a single, she then scored on an RBI triple from Hoffner, cutting the deficit to three runs. However, the Ohio offense would be unable to generate any more runs, falling by the final of 5-2.
GAME TWO: St. Louis 1, Ohio 0
Overall, Ohio did not score a run on four hits and did not commit an error, while St. Louis scored one run on one hit and did not commit an error.
Individually, freshman
Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) went 2-for-3, while senior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore
Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio) both had one hit for the Bobcats.
In the circle, redshirt sophomore
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching seven innings, allowing one run on one hit, walked three and struck out two.
The Bobcats got the first baserunner of the game, with Logan reaching first on a one-out single in the bottom of the first. However, the Ohio offense was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the second with it still scoreless.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. After a St. Louis batter reached after being hit by a pitch, the baserunner stole second and then scored on an RBI single, putting SLU up 1-0 after six innings.
Ohio looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, with
Austy Miller reaching first on a single. Unfortunately, Ohio was unable to even the score, falling, 1-0.
