CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Ohio Softball (10-5) wrapped up the Frost Classic today (Feb. 25), taking down Valparaiso 5-4. Ohio completed the weekend with a 4-1 record, tied for the best of the four teams competing throughout the weekend.
At the plate, the Bobcats were led by sophomore Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) and freshman Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio). Westler continued her hot streak at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Wilson also maintained a strong start to her freshman campaign, scoring two on a triple in the first inning. Junior Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) picked up another RBI on the weekend and scored the game winning run on a base hit from freshman Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio).
In the circle, junior Ellie Greene (Attica, Mich.) made the start, pitching two thirds of an inning before being relieved by freshman Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W. Va). Lieving was strong in relief, going 4.2 scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and striking out two. Redshirt sophomore Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) came in as the final pitcher for the Bobcats. She would pitch 1.2 innings, recording two strikeouts and picking up the win.
Ohio opened the scoring in the top of the first, putting four runs on the board. Hoffner put the Bobcats up early, scoring senior Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) on a single up the middle. Just after Hoffner, Wilson tripled scoring senior Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Hoffner. Westler scored Wilson on a single through the left side for the Bocbats fourth run. With their RBI, Wilson and Westler marked three consecutive games with at least one RBI.
The Beacons would respond in the bottom half of the first, picking up four runs of their own to tie the game at four apiece. Neither team would find a run until the seventh.
The Bobcats would regain the lead in the top of the seventh inning. After Hoffner reached base on a single, she advanced to third on a sac bunt and fly ball into the outfield. Farmer came to the plate and singled into left field to give the Bobcats the lead.
Skipp Miller returned to the circle to look for the final three outs for Ohio. She did exactly that, striking out two and inducing a ground ball to second base to secure the win for Ohio, 5-4.
The Bobcats will get back on the field next weekend (Mar. 1-3) at the Governor's Classic in Clarksville, Tennessee. Ohio will face off against IUPUI, Saint Louis, and Indiana State over the three day event. The Bobcats will first take on IUPUI on Friday (Mar. 1) at 4:30 p.m.
