BUIES CREEK, N.C..— The Ohio baseball team's (2-3) comeback bid fell short Saturday (Feb. 24) against Campbell (5-1), falling by a score of 12-14.
Individually, freshman
Pauly Mancino (Westlake, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI. Redshirt junior
AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run. All but one Bobcat batter had an RBI in the contest, and all but two had a hit.
On the mound, redshirt senior
Jacob Tate (Louisville, Tenn.) earned the start and was credited with the loss. Tate threw 3.1 innings, striking out for and allowing six earned runs (seven total). Graduate student
Tim Knapschaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) followed Tate, pitching 2.0 innings as well. Junior
Dillon Masters (New Albany, Ohio) closed out the contest, throwing for 2.2 innings, whipping four strikeouts.
The Bobcats fell down two runs early in the first when Campbell homered to left field, but the game would not see much action until the third when senior
Cole Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) was able to single in a runner to cut the lead in half. That was until the bottom of the third, when Campbell batters were able to bring in three runs on back-to-back home runs.
That would not stop the Bobcats' scoring efforts, when Mancino was able to come home on a sacrifice fly to bring in another run. Yet, the Camels would return another blow after a Bobcat score in the bottom of the fourth when they fired another home run over the left field wall. The Camels would also see another two runs come home in the bottom of the fifth, the score sitting at 9-2.
The Bobcats offense, which lay dormant, found its spark in the top of the 6
th when they put up six runs. The momentum was high for the Bobcats after scoring six and bringing the score within one, but the Camels would fire back again, putting on four runs on one hit the same inning.
The seventh inning would not yield any scoring, but the Bobcats' comeback bid mounted again when they were able to put up four more runs in the 8
th. Four doubles in the inning got the Bobcats on the board, including one courtesy of junior
Jackson Cauthron (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) which brought in two. The Bobcats would be within one again, but would surrender a run in the bottom of the 8
th that would bring the score to 12-14.
The top of the 9
th would yield zero baserunners and the Bobcat comeback would fall short. The Bobcats scored 12 runs on 14 hits and would pressure the 4-1 Camels throughout the contest.
