NASHVILLE, TENN.— Ohio baseball (2-0) recorded their second consecutive win against Lipscomb (0-2) to start the season this Saturday (Feb. 17) by a score of 8-2.
Individually, the Bobcats were led by senior
Gideon Antle (Licking, Mo.) who went 3-for-5 with three doubles and an RBI. Fifth year
Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) led all batters with 3 RBI on 3-for-6 hitting, adding in a run of his own. Both redshirt junior
AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) and junior
Taylor Gill (Orem, Utah) homered in the game and contributed two runs overall.
Overall, the Bobcats record 12 total hits with three doubles and two home runs. The team drew six walks and were hit by pitches four times.
On the mound, redshirt senior
Jacob Tate (Louisville, Tenn.) began the game, throwing for four complete innings with five strikeouts. Tate allowed only one run to come through on six hits. Junior
Zach Weber (Lebanon, Ohio) replaced Tate, facing 15 total batters. Weber allowed only one run on four hits. Freshman
Jack Geiser (Medina, Ohio) would inherit one out and two baserunners in the bottom of the 8th, but would close the game not allowing a single run over 1.2 innings pitched, also throwing two strikeouts. Weber was credited for his first win of the season.
After dominating the Bisons in their previous matchup Friday, the Bobcats began Saturday's competition much the same way, as Gill homered to right field to lead off the game. The Bobcats would get two more hits during the inning but failed to bring anyone else home.
The game wouldn't see much offensive action until the third inning when both teams put up a singular run. The Bobcats' came on behalf of junior
Jackson Cauthron (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)
, who was hit by a pitch, which brought freshman
JR Nelson (Vernon Hills, Ill.) home. The Bobcats had four baserunners in the third inning, all coming via walk or getting hit by a pitch. Yet, after the third, the score would sit at 2-1.
In the fourth inning, the Bobcat bats started to heat up, as both Nelson and Gill were able to find base early. Consecutive singles by Finney and senior
Cole Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) brought Nelson and Taylor home to bring the score to 4-1. After the pair of singles, Antle slapped a double down the left field line to bring Finney come and end the inning 5-1. The Bobcats would add a sixth run courtesy of Rausch's second home run in the first two games down the left-field line.
The Bisons were able to cut into the lead by a run with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 8
th, but that was all the scoring they would see in the inning with two additional baserunners.
Holding a 6-2 lead in the top of the 9
th, the Bobcats loaded the bases with two outs. Finney then stepped up to the plate and delivered a 2 RBI single to left field, bringing the Bobcat lead to a game-high of six. The Bison were able to get two baserunners on in the bottom of the ninth, but neither could score as the game ended in an 8-2 victory for the Bobcats.
