EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Ohio wrestling team (1-0) traveled to East Lansing, Mich. on Saturday (Nov. 9) for the Michigan State Open, competing in both Open and Freshman/Sophomore divisions. With two overall victories and four finishes in the top five, Ohio had an exciting second match for a highly anticipated season.
The Bobcats celebrated a remarkable achievement with two individual champions across both divisions. Redshirt freshman
Jeremy Olszko (Northfield, Ohio) showcased his talent and determination in the Freshman/Sophomore 174-pound class, triumphing in three match-ups, highlighted by one majority victory and two decisive wins. Meanwhile, redshirt junior
Peyten Kellar (Cutler, Ohio), fresh off an impressive 5th place finish at the 2024 NCAA Championship, claimed the title in the Open 157-pound division. Keller demonstrated exceptional skill, navigating through five challenging match-ups, including bouts against two Big Ten wrestlers and two MAC opponents.
Redshirt senior
Jordan Greer (Avon, Ohio) put forth a stellar performance, finishing second overall in the Open 285-pound class. He showcased his skills by defeating five opponents before ultimately succumbing in the final match by a narrow 2-0 decision. Similarly,
Garrett Thompson (Murrysville, Pa.), a redshirt junior, also achieved second place in the Open 174-pound division, navigating through five rigorous match-ups, but fell in the finals by sudden victory in the first period, with a final score of 4-1.
Ohio's other standout performers in the Freshman/Sophomore division included freshman Evan Wingrove (Ringold, Georgia) and freshman Wyatt Schmitt (Shorewood, Illinois), who both made impressive showings, finishing fourth in the 197-pound and 285-pound classes, respectively. Wingrove showcased his grappling prowess with two remarkable performances, including a swift fall in the first period and a decisive 9-3 victory, demonstrating his ability to control the match. Schmitt, not to be outdone, displayed his technical skills in two high-scoring decision match-ups, securing wins of 7-1 and 4-1, proving that he is a force to be reckoned with in the heavyweight ranks.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 17 for their home opener against Michigan State in the Convocation Center. The dual is set to begin at 1 p.m.
