ATHENS, Ohio. -- The No. 3 seeded Ohio soccer team (11-5-4) concluded the 2024 season on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 7), falling to No. 2 Buffalo (11-1-7), 2-1, in the Mid-American Conference Semifinals in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Overall, Ohio outshot Buffalo 13-10, with eight attempts on goal, compared to Buffalo's' five. Both teams drew three corner kicks in the matchup.
Freshman
Lillian Weller (Xenia, Ohio) scored the Bobcats lone goal in the contest, a successful penalty kick, while also registering one shot and one shot on goal. Junior
Scout Murray (Chicago, Ill.) added four shots with two on goal, while sophomore
Anna Burchett (Prestonburg, Ky.) had two attempts on goal and sophomore
Jaimason Brooker (Powell, Ohio) added two shots, with one on goal. Junior
Maia Kaufman (Westerville, Ohio) recorded one attempt on net, while junior
Eve Berish (Hudson, Ohio) and sophomore
Rylee Mensel (Westerville, Ohio) both added shots for the Bobcats.
In goal, junior
Celeste Sloma, (Columbus, Ohio) played all 90 minutes, while allowing two goals and making three saves.
Ohio started match with a strong rhythm against the Bulls, who put up a strong defensive wall in retaliation. However, Buffalo struck in the 13th minute, giving the Bulls an early 1-0 lead. The two teams continued to battle, when in the 35th minute, the Bobcats were awarded a penalty kick, which Weller capitalized on, knotting the match at 1-1 entering halftime.
At the break, Ohio outshot Buffalo 8-4, with the Bobcats recording four shots on goal.
The two teams batted for the next goal over the course of the next 40 minutes, with both teams registering a number of chances. However, the Buffalo offense was the first to break the tie, with a goal coming in the 82nd minute. After the Bulls took the lead, the Ohio offense was unable to break through the UB defense, ultimately falling, 2-1.
