ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Ohio wrestling team (1-1) traveled to Annapolis, Md. on Saturday (Nov. 23) for the Navy Classic. Ohio placed eighth overall out of 12 teams, with one Bobcat placing third on the podium individually.
The first win of the tournament came from redshirt sophomore
Logan Cravatas (Medina, Ohio) after defeating Bucknell with a decision of 11-4. Wrestling the 149-pound weight class, he went on to win his next match against Kent State, 7-4.
Redshirt junior,
Garrett Thompson (Murrysville, Pa.) was Ohio's star wrestler in the competition with a third-place finish in the 174-pound class. Thompson started the tournament with two strong decisions in his favor of 9-3 and 7-3, that was followed by a loss in the quarterfinal. However Thompson bounced back for the bronze, winning with a sudden victory against a Bucknell opponent.
Redshirt sophomore
Austin Starr (Indian Creek, Ohio) lived up to his name, destroying his first two opponents with falls at 1:28 against Cleveland State and 1:37 against The Citadel. Additionally, redshirt sophomore
Pierce Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio) was able to pin one of his 141-pound opponents from American at 1:44.
Despite losing his first and last match in 165 pounds, redshirt junior
Dan Segura (Columbus, Ohio) crushed tough wrestlers in his second and third matches. He pulled a close 5-4 decision against Oregon State. Against Cleveland State, he earned over three minutes of ride time as well as an 11-point shutout. Another redshirt junior with a solid victory was
Bobby Gaylord (Chicago, Ill.), who faced against Bucknell in 165-pounds, winning 19-3.
The Bobcats will be back in action at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on December 6
th and 7
th in Las Vegas.
