ATHENS, Ohio — Ohio freshman linebacker Stellan Bowman (Grand Rapids, Mich.) has made a notable impact on the field in his first season. He's earned significant playing time while adjusting to the demands of college life. Bowman's transition to Division I football wasn't easy, but his goals for the rest of the season fuel him to succeed. Â
When Bowman first arrived in Athens, he faced the challenge of adjusting from high school football to the higher intensity of college competition.Â
"It was hard for me to get used to playing at the college level because there was so much more to the game that I didn't understand," Bowman said. "Just learning the game better and how things work has been huge for me this season."
Bowman dove into the playbook and became well-versed in Ohio's way of life during the off-season. He wanted to understand football beyond the snap, and he believes that's why he's been able to contribute to the team in his first season. Â
"I worked a lot on learning the details of football and the things they never taught me in high school," Bowman said. "It was about being as prepared as possible so I could earn time on the field."
Bowman's favorite moment of the season so far came during a standout tackle against Kentucky. After he made the play, he turned to see his teammates and coaches jumping around the sideline. The celebration boosted the young Bobcat's confidence for the rest of the game.
Teammate support, especially from the upperclassmen, is something Bowman values. They've helped him adjust to the faster pace and higher expectations of college. They've also been there for him every step of the way. If Bowman needs help with football, or navigating campus, he knows where he can turn for help. Â
While football is a major part of Bowman's life, he also values spending time with his loved ones and focusing on his faith. The two keep him grounded.Â
He finds certain stories in the Bible, like David and Goliath, comforting because he relates them to his own life. His favorite verse, Philippians 4:13, is inked on his upper arm. It's something he can look to in all situations to feel reassured. Â
"It really helps me remember to give all the glory to God," Bowman said. "My next one will probably be another biblical story or verse about strength."Â
Bowman wants to channel his mental and physical strength through the rest of the season. He wants to continue exploring the nuisances of football and life to become the best version of himself. Â Â
As Bowman's first season rolls on, he'll remain focused on both his personal development and his role on the team. His combination of hard work, faith, and perseverance will play a key role in his success in the years ahead.Â
