OXFORD, Ohio – The Ohio field hockey team (4-7, 1-3 MAC) fell 5-1 to Miami (6-6, 3-1 MAC) on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6).
Overall, Ohio was outshot 28 to five, with 22 shots on goal for Miami and two for Ohio. Freshman midfielder Marie De Grande (Groot-Bijgaarden, Belgium) scored Ohio's lone goal, her first of the season.
Despite a tough loss, starting goalie graduate student Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) made 16 saves, with six of them coming in the fourth quarter alone.
Miami's offense was quick to strike, scoring their first goal in the third minute, then again in the sixth minute for a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcat offense began to press the RedHawk defense late in the first period. Ohio drew a penalty corner, then De Grande capitalized by scoring her first goal of the season to cut the deficit in half in the 12th minute.
The Bobcats were testing in the second period, but three saves from Lotze kept the score steady heading into halftime.
Miami added to their total in the third, scoring two goals for a 4-1 advantage. Miami scored its fifth goal to start the fourth period and Ohio's offense was shut down, ultimately losing the game, 5-1.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 11 to take on Bellarmine. First touch is set for 6 p.m.
