ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio volleyball team (7-11, 3-4 MAC) fell 3-2 (25-19, 16-25, 12-25, 25-23, 11-15) in its five-set battle with Ball State (11-8, 4-4 MAC) on Friday, Oct. 18.
Sophomore
Kam Hunt (Sylvania, Ohio) finished the match with a team-high 22 kills and 23.5 points in addition to five digs. Junior
Anna Kharchynska (Kyiv, Ukraine) and graduate student
Elizabeth Hoerlein (Mason, Ohio) combined for 24 kills and 26.5 points. Hoerlein recorded a team-best .471 hitting percentage. Freshman
Bryn Janke (Westfield, Wis.) led the team in assists with 26 total. Defensively, sophomore
Kendall Hickey (Fishers, Ind.) tallied a team-high 19 digs.
Ohio kicked off the match with 25-19 win in the first set before losing two straight sets. The Cardinals won the second set, 25-16, and the third set, 25-12.
The match was on the line heading into the fourth set as the Bobcats trailed Ball State 2-1. Ball State dominated majority of the fourth set and led Ohio 19-14 before the Bobcats went on a five-point scoring run to tie the set. Ohio went on the win the fourth 25-23 and forced the match to be decided in the fifth set. Ball State went on to win the fifth set, 15-11 and took the match in a 3-2 decision.
The Bobcats will be back in action when they face Miami (OH) in the Battle of the Bricks on Saturday, Oct. 19 in the Convo. The match is set to start at 4 p.m. ET.
