CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Ohio wrestling team (5-4, 1-2 MAC) was unable to defeat Cleveland State (4-7, 2-2 MAC) tonight, Jan. 26. It was a tight battle between the two sides with the Vikings able to capitalize on early success to lead them to a 24-19 win.
After dropping the first four matches of the night, Ohio found itself in a 17-0 hole. Redshirt sophomore Peyten Kellar (Cutler, Ohio) was able to put the Bobcats on the board with a win by fall. The win helped Kellar improve to 14-2 on the year and 7-0 in meets.
Redshirt sophomore Garrett Thompson (Murrysville, Pa.) followed suit, also winning by fall. The fall gave Thompson nine on the season, cementing himself in the top ten for the most wins by fall in the NCAA.
The Bobcats continued their hot streak with junior Sal Perrine (Northfield, Ohio). Perrine took advantage of a last second takedown to help him win by a 4-1 decision. The win gave Perrine his 14th win of the year.
Junior Zayne Lehman (Akron, Ohio) picked up the final win of the night for Ohio. Lehman shut out his opponent and used more than four minutes of riding time to secure an 8-0 major decision. The win gave the Bobcats their first lead of the night, 19-17.
Ohio was unable to pick up wins in either of the final two matches and ultimately fell by a score of 24-19.
The Bobcats will return to the mat next Sunday when they take on Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The meet is set to start at 2:00 p.m. and can be streamed on FloWrestling.
