ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio volleyball team (7-8, 2-1 MAC) swept Kent State (4-10, 0-3 MAC) 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-17) in an exciting mid-week conference matchup on Tuesday.
The Bobcats were led by graduate student
Caitlin O'Farrell (Suwanee, Ga.) who recorded 14 kills and a season-best .778 hit percentage. Sophomore
Anna Kharchynska (Kyiv, Ukraine) and junior
Caroline Clippard (Cincinnati, Ohio) combined for 15 kills, with Clippard recording an impressive .429 hit percentage.
Defensively, senior
Sam Steele (Omaha, Neb.) led the game with 12 digs and sophomore
Chariti Winzeler (Toledo, Ohio) finished with eight.
The first set began with an early 5-0 run for the Bobcats, making the score 8-4. After trailing the entire set, Kent State got within one at 17-16, but then Ohio pulled away with a 6-1 run and Steele sealed the set with an ace, winning 25-19.
Ohio took the lead early in the second set but soon found themselves trailing. The Bobcats rallied from behind and went on a 7-1 run, highlighted by five O'Farrell kills to give Ohio a 15-14 advantage. The Bobcats did not stop there, tallying a 9-1 run to win set two, 25-17.
The Bobcats' momentum carried into the third set as they earned a nine-point advantage, leading Kent State 15-6. Looking for the sweep, Ohio continued to dominate and grew their lead to double digits. The Bobcats closed out the set with a 25-17 victory, earning their second MAC win of the season.
Up next, the Bobcats will travel to Buffalo for a weekend of conference play on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6:00 p.m.
