BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Ohio baseball team (15-18, 13-5 MAC) fell to the Indiana University Hoosiers (28-11, 9-3 BIG 10) today at Bart Kaufman Field, 9-8.
Individually, junior Alec Patino (Sioux City, Iowa) led Ohio, going 3-for-4 and recorded two RBIs. Fifth year Will Sturek (Minnetonka, Minn.) also recorded two RBIs while redshirt sophomore AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) scored two runs on two hits with one RBI.
On the mound, junior Luke Olson (Granville, Ill.) got the start, recording two strikeouts. Sophomore Tyler Peck (Oak Creek, Wis.) closed the game, throwing two scoreless innings with one strikeout.
Ohio's offense got on the board early with a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the day. Indiana answered with a two-run home run to give the Hoosiers their first lead. Patino tied the game with an RBI double. Indiana came right back with two runs to go up 4-2.
The Hoosiers capitalized on an Ohio error and scored two more runs in the third. Patino earned his second RBI of the day to make the score 6-3, Indiana. The Bobcats took advantage of a wild pitch and tallied on another run.
Sturek put Ohio within one run after an RBI single, driving in Rausch to make the score 6-5. Indiana had another multi-run inning in the bottom of the sixth, totaling three runs. Rausch continued to make contact, driving in a run with a groundout and putting the score at 9-6.
Sixth year Trevor Lukkes (Tustin, Calif.) got the Bobcats back into the game in the top of the ninth when he crushed a solo home run over the left field fence. A Hoosier error allowed Ohio to add on another run, setting the score at 9-8.
The Bobcats loaded the bases in the ninth but were unable to produce, falling 9-8.
Up next, the Bobcats look to even the series tomorrow (April 22) for game two against the Hoosiers. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET.
