ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (8-14, 6-4 MAC) overcame a five-run deficit against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (11-11, 4-6 MAC) at Bob Wren Stadium today (April 1), winning the first game of the series, 7-6.
Individually, the Bobcats were led by junior Cole Williams (Charlotte, N.C.). Williams recorded two RBIs and two runs. Redshirt sophomore AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) and junior Alec Patino (Sioux City, Iowa) each earned one RBI. Junior Gideon Antle (Licking, Mo.) went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs.
Junior Luke Olson (Granville, Ill.) got the start on the mound and pitched the first five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out six batters. Graduate student Colin Sells (Lancaster, Ohio) was credited with the win, allowing one run on one hit.
Eastern Michigan got on the board first, scoring one run in the first inning and another one in the second. The Eagles tallied on three more runs in the fourth off back-to-back home runs, giving them a 5-0 lead. Senior Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) put Ohio on the board in the bottom of the fifth, running home off a single from Patino.
Eastern Michigan added on another run in the sixth, putting the score at 6-1. The Bobcats' offensive momentum continued over from the fifth. Rausch began the scoring with an RBI single, driving in Antle. Ohio tallied on another run on an error, cutting the deficit to 6-3 at the end of the sixth.
Williams opened the bottom of the seventh with a two-RBI triple, cutting into the Eagles' lead. Williams was then able to score off Antle's RBI single, tying the game at six. A wild pitch gave Ohio their fourth run of the inning, earning their first lead of the game at 7-6.
Fifth year Braxton Kelly (Ulysses, Ky.) entered in the top of the eighth and proceeded to strikeout five of the six batters he faced. Back-to-back swinging strikeouts for Eastern Michigan in the top of the ninth ended the game, solidifying Ohio's 7-6 victory.
Up next, the Bobcats will return to Bob Wren to take on Eastern Michigan in a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 2.
