Ohio Softball Extends Win Streak to Six with Sweep of Akron

AKRON, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (16-14, 7-2 MAC) wrapped up the three-game series with Akron (14-14, 2-6 MAC) on Wednesday (March 29), sweeping the doubleheader and the series against the Zips. Ohio took the first game of the day, 5-2, before closing out the series with a 9-5 victory at Lee R. Jackson Field. 
 
The Bobcats now extend their win streak to six games. 
 
GAME ONE: Ohio 5, Akron 2
Overall, Ohio scored five runs on 10 hits and committed one error, while Akron scored two runs on five hits and committed two errors. 
 
Individually, sophomore Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, one run scored and three RBI, while junior Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) had two hits, a double, RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while sophomore Reagan Farmer (Baltimore, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Juniors Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) and Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) both had hits, while Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored one run. 
 
In the circle, graduate student Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) got the start, pitching all seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits, while walking one and striking out four. 
 
The Bobcats got on the board in the top of the first inning when Logan and Paoli both reached with one out. With two outs, Farmer drove in Logan with an RBI single, putting Ohio up, 1-0 going into the bottom of the inning. The Zips threatened to even the score in the bottom of the inning, getting runners on first and third with two outs. However, the Ohio defense was able to force a ground out to end the inning, keeping the Bobcats' 1-0 lead. 
 
Ohio looked to add on in the top of the second with O'Brien reaching on a single and advancing when Hummel reached on an error. However, the Bobcats were unable to push a run across, keeping their lead at 1-0. The Bobcats added on in the top of the third, scoring two runs on a two-run home run from Hoffner, putting the Bobcats up 3-0 going into the bottom of the inning. 
 
Ohio added on in the top of the fourth inning. After Hummel singled, stole second and advanced to third, an RBI single from Paoli pushed her home. Moments later, an RBI double from Hoffner scored Paoli, giving Ohio a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Akron was able to get on the board in the bottom of the inning, scoring on an RBI single, cutting the Ohio lead to 5-1 going into the top of the fifth. 
 
Akron got another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring one run on an error, cutting the Ohio lead to 5-2. 
 
After a scoreless sixth inning from both teams, Akron looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Zips got the leadoff runner on with a single up the middle, however Coffelt and the Ohio defense was able to get the next two batters to strike out, before forcing a ground out to end the game and secure Ohio's 5-2 win. 
 
GAME TWO: Ohio 9, Akron 5
Overall, Ohio scored nine runs on 14 hits and did not commit an error, while Akron scored five runs on 10 hits and committed two errors. 
 
Individually, Logan led the Bobcats, going 4-for-4 with a homerun, two RBI and four runs scored. Freshman Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Paoli added two hits, a home run, double, three RBI and a run scored. Hoffner added two more hits with an RBI and a run scored, while Hummel and Grein recorded one hit and one run scored. Farmer also added a hit for Ohio, while sophomore CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) drew a walk and registered one RBI. 
 
In the circle, sophomore Ellie Greene (Attica, Mich.) got the start, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, while walking one and striking out one. Freshman Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one run on one hit while striking out two. Redshirt freshman Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) closed out the game for Ohio, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while walking one and striking out two. 
 
The Bobcats struck in the top of the first inning. After Hummel reached on a leadoff single Logan crushed a two-run homerun to left center, putting Ohio up 2-0 early. Ohio added on in the inning when with two outs, Grein singled and then scored on an RBI double from Westler, giving the Bobcats the 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the first. 
 
The Bobcats added on in the top of the third inning. Logan led the inning off with a single and then scored on an RBI single from Hoffner. With two outs, Westler singled, putting runners on first and second, however, the Bobcats would not add on, taking a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the third. Akron threatened in the bottom of the inning, getting runners on with a double and a walk. However, the Ohio defense held strong, sending the game to the fourth inning with a 4-0 lead. 
 
Akron got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits, cutting the Ohio lead to 4-3 going into the fifth inning. The Bobcats got a run back in the top of the fifth. Logan reached on a leadoff single and then scored on an RBI double from Paoli, giving Ohio a 5-3 lead entering the bottom of the inning. 
 
Akron got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one run on two hits to cut the Ohio lead to 5-4 going into the top of the sixth. Akron looked to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, however the Ohio defense was able to force the Zips to strand a runner at third, keeping Ohio in the lead. 
 
The Bobcats added to their lead in the top of the seventh. After Logan led off the inning with a single to right, Paoli crushed a two-run home run to right center, putting Ohio up 7-4. After Hoffner reached on an error and Westler reached on a single, Hoffner would score on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly from Keidel scored Westler, putting the Bobcats up 9-4 going into the bottom of the seventh. 
 
Akron threatened to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, loading the bases with no outs. After scoring a run on a ground out, the Ohio defense was able to force Akron into the final outs of the game, securing the 9-5 win and the series sweep. 
 
UP NEXT
The Bobcats return to Athens April 1-2 to take on MAC opponent Ball State. The Bobcats and Cardinals face off on Saturday, April 1 with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Ohio Softball Field. The teams conclude the three-game series on Sunday with a single game set to start at 1 p.m.
