MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Ohio baseball team (5-13, 3-3 MAC) fell to Morehead State (10-10) today in a back-and-forth battle, 19-14.
Individually, the Bobcats were led by junior Cole Williams (Charlotte, N.C.), who went 5-for-5 at the plate and recorded three RBIs. Fifth year Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) was a threat on the bases, scoring three runs off three hits. Fifth years Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) and Will Sturek (Minnetonka, Minn.) each scored two runs off two hits with two RBIs apiece. On the mound, sophomore Zach Weber (Lebanon, Ohio) closed the game, allowing three runs and three hits.
The Bobcats got on the board early with Sturek crushing a two-run homer over a right field fence. Morehead State put up one run in the first, and an additional eight runs in the second taking the lead.
After a scoreless second inning, Ohio was looking to bounce back in the third. The Bobcats began their scoring in the third with a bases-loaded walk. Next, Williams singled to right, driving in Minzey. Sturek took advantage of a sacrifice fly, running home and adding to Ohio's total. Redshirt sophomore Nick Dolan (Pittsbirgh, Pa.) closed out the inning with a two-RBI single, leaving Ohio trailing 9-7.
After the Bobcats held Morehead State in the third and continued to add runs in the fourth. Kasperbauer's double drove in Minzey, cutting Morehead State's lead to one run. Williams' strong offensive performance continued in the fifth, running home off a Dolan single. Despite a groundout into a double play, Ohio tallied another run, giving them a 10-9 lead. Junior Alec Patino (Sioux City, Iowa) capped off the inning with an RBI single, expanding the lead to two runs.
Morehead State took a 12-11 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homerun. The next inning, a two-run home run from Williams put Ohio back up by one run. Morehead State answered quickly with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a scoreless seventh for the Bobcats, Morehead State continued to add on to their lead with another run. The Bobcats failed to score in the eighth, and Morehead State tallied on three more runs, expanding their lead to six.
A bases-loaded walk drove in one run for the Bobcats in the top of the ninth. Unable to score again, Ohio fell 19-14.
Up next, the Bobcats will return to conference play when they travel to take on the Huskies of Northern Illinois. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. ET on Friday, March 24.
