DEKALB, Ill. – The Ohio baseball team (6-13, 4-3 MAC) defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies (4-16, 1-6 MAC) at Ralph McKinzie Field at Walt and Janice Owens Park today (March 24), 11-2.
Individually, juniors Cole Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) and Gideon Antle (Licking, Mo.) led the Bobcats with both players earning three RBIs. Fifth year Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) led both teams in runs with three. Fifth years Will Sturek (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) both contributed to the scoring with a combined four runs.
Junior Luke Olson (Granville, Ill.) got the start on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on eight hits. Redshirt junior Jacob Tate (Louisville, Tenn.) closed the game, pitching for three scoreless innings.
The Bobcats got on the board early when redshirt sophomore AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) took advantage of a throwing error and ran home. With the bases loaded, a single hit by Kasperbauer drove in junior Alec Patino (Sioux City, Iowa) to grow the lead. Ohio continued scoring with back-to-back bases-loaded walks. Senior Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) capped off the first inning with an RBI single, giving Ohio a 5-0 lead.
Ohio's momentum continued through the second inning with Williams hitting a two-RBI triple. Williams was then able to run home off a Northern Illinois error, making the score 8-0. The Huskies scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the third, and then one more in the fourth, putting them down 8-2.
Sturek crushed a one-run homer over the right field fence, adding to their lead in the seventh. Finney opened the eighth inning with a home run to center field, setting Ohio up with a 10-2 lead heading into the ninth. Kasperbauer scored his third run of the day to close the game, solidifying Ohio's 11-2 victory.
Up next, the Bobcats will look for their second win of the weekend against Northern Illinois tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 25.
