TOLEDO, OH.– The Ohio women's basketball team (4-17, 2-8 MAC) finished out their road stretch playing the Toledo Rockets (17-4, 8-2 MAC) at Savage Arena on Saturday. The Bobcats held strong against the third ranked team in the MAC, but ultimately fell 55-66. Individually, Ohio was led once more by Yaya Felder, securing 33 points, which is her second highest game in scoring, and Caitlyn Kroll led Ohio in rebounds, snagging 9; 4 offensive and 5 defensive.
Overall, the Bobcats women's basketball team went 20-of-55 from the field, 8-of-28 from the three, 7-of-8 from the line, and secured 36 rebounds, and 10 assists.
In the first 10 minutes of play, Ohio was strong on the boards collecting multiple rebounds as they got into their rhythm.. Caitlyn Kroll initiated the rebounding in the first minute of play, grabbing two offensive rebounds back to back, which was shortly followed by two defensive rebounds from Yaya Felder. Ohio's first points of the game came from free throws, before a driving layup from Kroll initiated the Bobcats offense. The Rockets then went on a 11 point scoring run to give them a 15-4 lead with 5:53 left in the first. Yaya Felder and Jaya McClure responded to the deficit, collectively grabbing 7 points to get the score to 11- 20 going into the second quarter.
Abby Garnett stepped up for the Bobcats in the second quarter with an immediate three point jump shot to decrease the deficit to a two possession game. Garnett also grabbed rebounds in the paint for the Bobcats leading to a three pointer from Felder, and a second chance driving layup. After the first media timeout of the quarter, Kendall Hale grabbed a three point jumper for the Bobcats followed by a driving layup from Jaya McClure ending the second 37-26. Ohio finished out the half going 10-of-30 from the field, 4-of-15 from the three, 2-of-2 from the free throw line, and securing 20 rebounds; 5 offensive, and 15 defensive.
Coming out of the locker room from half, the Bobcats were determined to match the Rockets in scoring, securing an early three pointer from Yaya Felder. Ohio then forced a turnover on Toledo, leading to a driving layup from Abby Garnett that was assisted by Caitlyn Kroll getting the score to 31-37. Yaya hit another three pointer to follow, putting the Bobcats back in the contest only down by 3. From there the two teams went back and forth with Ohio closing in on the Rockets. The Bobcats managed to get the score within 1 point at 38-39, with 1:49 left on the clock.
Going into the fourth and final quarter, the score stood at 40-44. The conference game proved to be a battle in the last ten minutes of play with points being fired from both ends. Jessica Cook for the Rockets initiated the scoring with a layup before Yaya started Ohio in the fourth with a three point jumper getting the score to 43-46. From there other points came from Kendall Hale and Jaya McClure. Approaching the first media timeout in the fourth quarter, the Bobcats were within one point of Toledo at 49-50. After the timeout, Toledo took off offensively, going on a 12 point run led by Kehra Goss and securing the win. The final score was Ohio 55, Toledo 66.
