BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Ohio baseball team (2-5) defeated the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (7-1) on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 26) at Nick Denes Field, 6-4. This marked the Hilltoppers' first loss of the 2023 season and the Bobcats' first victory of the four-game series.
Individually, fifth year Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) went 1-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Junior Alec Patino (Sioux City, Iowa) led both teams in RBIs with two. Patino went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Fifth year Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux, City, Iowa) and redshirt sophomore AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) each scored one run on two hits and had two RBIs. Redshirt sophomore Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also contributed to the offense with one run scored and one hit.
Junior Trent Spoon (Bourbonnais, Ill.) got the start on the mound. Spoon pitched through five innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three and walking one. Junior Mitchel Hemmen (Teutopolis, Ill.) threw two innings, allowing two runs on two hits, with one strikeout and one walk. Redshirt junior Jacob Tate (Louisville, Tenn.) finished the game, allowing one run on one hit while striking out one.
The Bobcats started the game off strong, putting two runners on base. Patino hit a double, driving in Minzey and Kaperbauer for the first runs of the day. Rausch began the second inning with a single, driving in Dolan from second to grow their lead to three. Western Kentucky scored in the bottom of the second, cutting into the Bobcats lead to 3-1.
After a scoreless third and fourth innings, Rausch opened the fifth with a ground-rule double, reaching third on sacrifice bunt. The next at-bat, Rausch capitalized on being in scoring position and scored off a single from Kasperbauer. Patino kicked off the sixth inning in a similar fashion, doubling to left field before he scored Ohio's fifth run off a sacrifice fly, extending the Bobcats' lead to four runs.
Western Kentucky added two more runs to their total, putting the score at 5-3 Ohio entering the eighth. Minzey opened the eighth hammering a ball down right field to score a one run home run to add to Ohio's lead. Western Kentucky failed to score, putting the Bobcats in good position up 6-3 at the end of the eighth. The Hilltoppers scored one in the ninth, but it was not enough to catch up to the Bobcats, giving Ohio a 6-4 victory.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday, Mar. 4 when they travel to take on Southern Illinois. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
