
Hartel Crowned MAC Champ and Freshman of the Year as Ohio Swimming Concludes MACs

OXFORD, Ohio – Freshman Lauren Hartel was crowed champion in the 1650 freestyle and Freshman of the Year as the Ohio swimming and diving team concluded competition at the 2023 Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday night (Feb. 25). The Bobcats finished this year's championships in fourth place with 529.5 points.
After the championships, Hartel (Arlington, Va.) was named MAC Freshman of the Year and First Team All-MAC, while junior Ami Hornyak (Debrecen, Hungary) was named First Team All-MAC as well. Senior McKenzie Grau (Mason, Ohio), senior Emma Fortman (Madeira, Ohio) and freshman Casadie DiBetta (St. Clairsville, Ohio) were named to the All-MAC Second Team.
In the first event of the night, the 1650 freestyle, Hartel was crowed the MAC champion, finishing in 16:35.18. She is the Bobcats' first champion in the event since 2009. Junior Morgan Croaning (Carmel, Ind.) placed sixth overall with a time of 16.52.63, while sophomore Gabrielle McKee (Gilbertsville, Pa.) placed 16th in 17:09.50. Junior Olivia Morlok (Columbus, Ind.) placed 23rd in 17:26.48.
In the 200 back, graduate student Athena Aravantinou (North Bethesda, Md.) finished seventh overall with a time of 2:00.19, while junior Riley Bunstine (Alexandria, Ohio) placed 10th overall with a time of 1:58.87.
In the 100-yard free style, Grau placed fourth with a time of 49.87, while Fortman finished sixth in 50.16. Junior Caroline Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa.) touched in with a time of 50.70 and an 11th place finish.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Ami Hornyak finished third with a time of 2:11.50, while DiBetta finished fifth in 2:13.60. Freshman Emily Ellsworth finished eighth in 2:16.61 and sophomore Julia Strine (Shippensburg, Pa.) finished ninth in 2:16.66. Freshman Anna McGrath concluded the event in 13th place with a time of 2:18.00 while sophomore Edie Sawyer (Cranberry Township, Pa.) finished 14th in 2:18.44.
In the 200-yard fly, junior Gabrielle Brust (Granville, Ohio) finished sixth in 2:00.14, while senior Madeline Marks (Bentonville, Ark.) placed 11th with a time of 2:02.21.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Ohio team of Dunigan, Grau, Fortman and Brust finished sixth with a time of 3:22.29.
