PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

Athens, Ohio – Ohio women's soccer are MAC Champs and are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints. 

SOCCER

After a Cinderella run through the 2023 MAC Tournament that saw the sixth-seeded Ohio soccer team (9-7-5) win its first-ever MAC Championship, the Bobcats will head to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The Bobcats will head to East Lansing, Mich. to take on the 5th-seeded Michigan State (12-4-3) on Friday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. 

After entering the tournament at the sixth seed, Ohio went to Muncie, Ind. to defeat No. 3 Ball State, before heading to Kalamazoo to take down No. 2 Bowling Green, 2-1 and No. 4 Kent State, 2-1. The final two matches were come-from-behind affairs that saw Tournament MVP Scout Murray score the game-winning goals in both matches to raise the Bobcats to victory.

FOOTBALL

The Ohio football team (6-3, 3-2 MAC) are set to play their first "Midweek MACtion" game against the Buffalo Bulls (3-6, 3-2 MAC) next Tuesday (Nov. 7) in Buffalo, N.Y. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at UB Stadium. The game can be seen on ESPN2.

The Bobcats and the Bulls have met 28 times since 1949 with a series record of 17-11. The two teams last met in Athens during the 2022 season, where Ohio won 45-24. This victory marked their fifth victory at Frank Solich Field and their sixth of the season, making them Bowl eligible.

PROMOTIONS: T-shirt giveaway for the first 125 students 

The Ohio men's basketball team (0-0) begins the 2023-24 season this week with two games. The Bobcats' week begins on Wednesday, Nov. 8 with Ohio hosting Troy (0-0) in the first game of the MAC/Sun Belt Challenge. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 11 when they head to Cleveland, Ohio to take on Cleveland State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. inside the Wolstein Center and will also be shown on ESPN+. 

The Bobcats won its exhibition match last Thursday in Athens, Ohio also returns 11 from last years squad and welcomes three newcomers in transfers Shereef Mitchell and ike Cornish and freshman Ben Nicol

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio women's basketball team opens the 2023-24 season this weekend on Saturday, Nov. 11 when the Bobcats head to Boone, N.C. to take on Appalachian State in the first game of the MAC/Sun Belt Challenge. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. inside the Holmes Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. 

The Bobcats won their exhibition game last Wednesday. The Bobcats return seven from last year's team, while welcoming seven newcomers.  

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Nov. 10  / at NCAA Great Lakes Regional / Madison, Wisc. / Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course / Women's 6k; 12:30 p.m. EST, Men's 10k; 1:30 p.m. EST / Live Stats / Meet Central

The Ohio men's and women's cross country teams head to Madison, Wisc. for the 2023 NCAA Great Lakes Regionals hosted by Wisconsin at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The women's 6k is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. EST, while the men's 10k is set to start at 1:30 p.m. EST. 

The women's team is coming off a third-place finish at MACs two weeks ago, that saw the top-three teams separated by only eight points. Junior Theresa Hagey (Akron, Ohio) and fifth year Tony Tonkovich (Athens, Ohio) led both teams with standout performances. Hagey was the top finisher of all Ohio runners as she earned First Team All-MAC honors with a third-place time of 20:33.74 in the women's race. Tonkovich secured Second Team All-MAC honors with an eighth-place finish and personal-best time of 24:29.93 in the men's 8k.

VOLLEYBALL

The Ohio volleyball team (15-12, 10-5 MAC) hits the road for the final stretch of the regular season. Starting this weekend, Ohio heads to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on Central Michigan (14-13, 8-7 MAC) starting Friday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. on ESPN+ inside McGurik Arena. Ohio concludes the series on Saturday, Nov. 11 st 4 p.m. on ESPN+. 

The Bobcats are coming off a 2-0 weekend that saw that Bobcats take two wins over Eastern Michigan in Athens, both 3-0 sweeps.  

WRESTLING

Ohio wrestling begins the home slate of its 2-23-24 schedule this weekend whe Ohio hosts UT-Chattanooga and Ashland  for a tri-meet on Saturday, Nov. 11 inside the Convocation Center. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m. inside the Convocation Center. 

The Bobcats opened the season on Nov. 4 at the Southeast Open hosted by Virginia Tech. The Bobcats had nine top-finishers including two individual champions in the Open Division: redshirt sophomores Garrett Thompson (Murrysville, Pa.) and Peyten Kellar (Cutler, Ohio) won in the 165-pound and 157-pound classes respectively.
