MUNCIE, Indiana – The Ohio soccer team (4-6-5) tied the Ball State Cardinals today (Oct. 15) on the road with a final score of 2-2.
Sophomore Scout Murray (Chicago, Ill.) generated the first chances for the Bobcats with two shots on target in the early minutes. Murray had one more chance come her way after sophomore Rayann Pruss (Perrysburg, Ohio) down the left wing, but was unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
While Ohio had the majority of offensive opportunities, Ball State sprung an opportunity on the counter-attack. A cross into the box from the left wing was deflected on frame and into the back of the net to put the Cardinals ahead.
The Bobcats would quickly bounce back. A handball in the box from Ball State led to a penalty kick and an opportunity to equalize the game. The Bobcats' leading goalscorer, senior Shae Robertson (Lexington, Ky.), stepped up to the spot. Her right-footed shot slipped into the bottom left corner to make it a 1-1 game. The goal was Robertson's seventh of the season, extending her team lead and career high.
The game would go into the half all square. Ohio had a strong offensive performance in the first half, taking ten shots, six of them on target, and accumulating three corners. Ball State had five shots, three on target, and two corner kicks.
Coming out of the break, senior Carsyn Prigge (Lexington, Ky.) looked to break the deadlock with a long-range shot, but her shot sailed just wide. Murray also added a few chances but was unable to find the frame.
The Cardinals would get the go-ahead-goal 13 minutes into the second half. A nice combination of passes by Ball State would provide an open look for the Cardinal forward. Her left-footed shot found the bottom corner, giving Ball State a 2-1 advantage.
Ohio would respond in a matter of minutes with Murray getting the goal. Prigge took the ball away and made a driving run forward. A nice run by Murray opened a window for a through ball from Prigge, just in front of the goalkeeper's reach, Murray flicked the ball into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Both sides looked for the winner, but failed to create any true scoring chances. The final whistle blew and the Bobcats and Cardinals had tied. The tie is Ohio's third consecutive tie and fifth of the year.
The game ended with the Bobcats recording 23 shots, 14 on goal, and three corners. Ball State had 16 shots, nine on target, and two corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Celeste Sloma added seven saves to her season tally, which now stands at 63.
After today's game, Ohio sits in eighth in the MAC standings. The Bobcats will look to move up at least two spots to qualify for the MAC Tournament.
