Ohio Women's Basketball Takes a Loss Against Western Michigan

ATHENS, OH.– The Ohio Women's basketball team (2-13, 0-4 MAC) returns home for Turn it Gold to play the Western Michigan Broncos (7-8, 2-2 MAC) at the Convocation Center. The Bobcats found themselves in a tough MAC battle this Wednesday (1/18), ultimately falling to the Broncos 57-67. Ohio was led in scoring by Yaya Felder securing 17 points total, followed by Jasmine Hale with 13. Ohio had 3 players reach double figures in scoring and grabbed a combined 37 rebounds. 

From the jump, the Broncos grabbed the ball and challenged Ohio on offense, but the Bobcats came back with Abby Garnett hitting a three pointer to gain the first lead. Other scorers from the first quarter were Yaya Felder (5) and Jasmine Hale (5). On defense, Kate Dennis had an important block to force a Western Michigan turnover. Collectively, Ohio had 11 rebounds and 6 assists, with the quarter ending on a defensive block from Caitlyn Krollputting the Bobcats up 17-16 going into the second.

The Bobcats entered the second quarter with an energized offense led by Caitlyn Kroll who went 3-3 from both the paint and the three point line. On the defensive side, Abby Garnett grabbed 3 rebounds out of Ohio's 8 in the quarter. A key play to end the quarter came from Yaya Felder with a behind the back pass to Jasmine Hale to increase the Bobcats lead by a score of 35-34 going into the locker room. 

Entering the third quarter, Ohio fell short to Western Michigan's offense. Jasmine Hale led on defense for Ohio with 3 rebounds followed by Ella PopeYaya Felder and Abby Garnett with 2 out rebounding Western Michigan 13 to 10. The Bobcats also forced 3 turnovers to increase opportunities to score and Yaya Felder grabbed a steal leading into a jump shot from Caitlyn Kroll. At the end of the third quarter, the Bobcats were in a 7 point deficit 39-46. 

In the final ten minutes of play, the Bobcats started with Caitlyn Kroll grabbing a defensive rebound which led to a three pointer from Yaya Felder, continued by a driving layup. Other scoring for the Bobcats came from Jasmine Hale and Caitlyn Kroll, but the team ultimately fell to Western Michigan's offense led by Lauren Ross, totaling 27 points.

The Ohio Bobcats will hit the road to Oxford, Ohio for the Battle of the Bricks against the Miami University Redhawks. Tipoff is set for 1pm and the MAC contest will be available to stream on ESPN3.
