Ohio Volleyball Drops to Marquette in Season Opener

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Ohio volleyball team (0-1) falls 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 15-25) to Marquette (2-0) in its season opener at the Memorial Coliseum on Saturday (Aug. 27).

The Bobcats dropped a tough three sets against the Golden Eagles to start the 2022 season campaign. Marquette out hit Ohio .280 to .124 while recording eight service aces.

In the first set, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 5-0 led. The Bobcats progressively fought back to cut the led to two but frequent runs by Marquette kept them out front. After a four-point streak, the Golden Eagles took set one 25-17.

Set two started off in Ohio's favor but quickly turned into a back-and-forth battle. Despite six lead changes and eight ties, a 4-0 run put the Golden Eagles up 12-9 and the Bobcats were never able to regain the lead. Ohio fell 25-16 in the second set.

The Bobcats tried to keep themselves alive in the third set but struggled to match Marquette offensively. Ultimately, the Golden Eagles won the match with a 25-15 win in set three.

Senior middle blocker Caitlin O'Farrell (Suwanee, Ga.) had a strong showing at this evening's match with eight kills and two block assists, while hitting .412. Outside hitters Caroline Clippard (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Olivia Margolies (Galena, Ohio) were also key attackers for Ohio, registering six and four kills.

Senior setter Parker Kwiatkowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the team in assists with 23. Defensively, Kwiatkowski and junior libero Sam Steele (Omaha, Neb.) saw eight digs apiece while Margolies had six.

The Bobcats will be back in action tomorrow (Aug. 28) against the No. 11 Kentucky at 4 p.m. EST. in the Memorial Coliseum.
