ATHENS, Ohio—The Ohio baseball team (24-19, 16-12) finished the weekend strong, defeating Akron (13-35, 11-25) 11-5 and sweeting the series.
"It was good to get the win today, in order to get the sweep" said head coach
Craig Moore. "We have a tough week coming up with Ball State. It's going to be a challenging series, but I think our guys are going to embrace it and be ready to go."
Individually, freshman
AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two stolen bases, redshirt senior
Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Md.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks and fifth year
Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, two doubles and two runs scored.
On the mound, senior Brendan Roder (Sioux City, Iowa) pitched seven innings, drawing four fly outs and 14 ground outs. Freshman
Zach Weber (Lebanon, Ohio) and fifth year
Brett Manis (Port Huron, Mich.) pitched an inning apiece.
The Zips struck first, score three runs in the second off a double and two singles. Ohio answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run off a double from senior
Will Sturek (Minnetonka, Minn.). The next inning, the Zips extended their lead to 4-1 with a ground out. The Bobcats evened the score in the bottom of the third; Kasperbauer drove in two runs with a double to center field, later scoring off a Sturek single to tie the game, 4-4.
A fielder's choice put Akron back in the lead in the fourth, but Ohio went to work in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs off five hits. Fifth year
Isaiah Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.) kicked off the rally with an RBI double, scoring two at-bats later when Kasperbauer hit a two-RBI double to right field. Rausch scored the fourth run of the inning when he stole home and singles from redshirt senior
Spencer Harbert (Middletown, Del.) and Richardson put the score at 10-5.
Kasperbauer drove in Ohio's final run with a double to right field, securing the Bobcats' 11-5 win.
