ATHENS, Ohio— The Ohio baseball team (28-22, 20-15) split the doubleheader against Western Michigan (18-35, 15-23), dropping the first game, 10-1, and bouncing back with a 12-7 victory in game two. Senior
Will Sturek (Minnetonka, Minn.) hit a major milestone, recording his first three collegiate home runs in the second game.
"That was a big swing by Will, and he kept it going for two more at-bats. It was a very unique situation" said head coach
Craig Moore. "Will works hard and put some time and effort into the cages and hitting. We're happy for him."
GAME ONE
Western Michigan's pitching was dominant, with Easton Sikorski pitching a complete game and allowing one run on two hits in the seventh.
The Broncos jumped ahead in the second, scoring two runs off a double. In the fifth, they extended their lead to 7-0 with two singles, a double and a wild pitch. Western Michigan scored three more runs in the top of the seventh, putting the Bobcats at a 10-0 deficit.
In the bottom of the seventh, fifth year
Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa), singled, scoring the Bobcats' only run of the game off a double from
Spencer Harbert (Middletown, Del.), putting the final score at 10-1.
GAME TWO
Western Michigan struck in the second inning, scoring the first run of the game off a wild pitch. The next inning, senior
Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) tied the game, 1-1, with an RBI double. In the top of the fourth, a single gave the Broncos a brief 2-1 lead, but Ohio surged ahead in the bottom of the inning. Redshirt freshman
AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) tied the game with an infield single before scoring off a Kasperbauer double. Harbert extended the Bobcats' lead with a single to right field before senior Sturek crushed his first collegiate home run, launching Ohio ahead, 7-2.
"I've been waiting a long time for this," said Sturek. "I put up some pretty good swings; they just haven't left the park yet. I knew it was gone; it felt really good."
The Broncos rallied in the fifth, cutting the Bobcats' lead to one run. A Kasperbauer sacrifice fly drove in graduate student
Cael Baker (Gahanna, Ohio), putting Ohio ahead, 8-6.
In the bottom of the sixth, Sturek launched his second home run of the game to center field before redshirt freshman
Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) hit a two-run homer, putting the score at 11-6. Sturek wasn't done there; he crushed his third home run in the eighth inning, this time to right center field.
"I remember telling one of my teammates I was going to be more aggressive, and I took that through my last three at-bats," said Sturek.
A Western Michigan home run in the ninth drove in one more run for the Broncos, putting the score at 12-7.
Individually, Sturek led the way, going 3-for-3 with three home runs, five RBIs and two walks. On the mound, senior
Braxton Kelly gave up one run on five hits in 4.2 innings pitched.
