ATHENS, Ohio-- The Ohio baseball team (29-22, 21-15 MAC) wrapped up the regular season with a senior day victory, defeating Western Michigan (18-36, 15-24) 9-3.
"The seniors mean so much, not just our program but any sports program," said head coach
Craig Moore. "What those guys invest in terms of waking up at 5:15 in the morning to do a lift or doing extra hitting and extra conditioning to get themselves in a position to go to the postseason... it's a pretty special group for us."
Individually, fifth year
Isaiah Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.) went 2-for-3 with a double and two walks while junior
Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored. On the mound, senior Brendan Roder (Sioux City, Iowa) pitched five complete innings while fifth years
Chace Harris (New Marshfield, Ohio) and
Brett Manis (Port Huron, Mich.) each went one inning.
Western Michigan took the lead in the first, scoring two runs, before fifth year
Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) drove in the Bobcats' first run with a ground out in the bottom of the inning. Redshirt junior
Xavier Haendiges (Salem, Ind.) tied the game, scoring from first off a throwing error.
Ohio took a six-run lead in the fourth, starting with a two-RBI single from Finney and immediately followed by an RBI double from Kasperbauer. After a Broncos pitching change, a single from senior
Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and a double from
Spencer Harbert (Middletown, Del.) put the Bobcats up, 8-2.
Western Michigan tacked on a run in the fifth, but the Ohio pitching staff held them the remainder of the game. In the eighth, redshirt senior
Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Md.) singled up the middle, putting the final score at 9-3.
