BOONE, N.C. — The Ohio wrestling team competed at the Mountaineer Invitational today (Nov. 12). Overall, the day was highlighted by sophomore
Dan Segura's first place finish at 157 pounds in the open division and four third place finishes in the invitational division.
At 141 pounds in the Invitational division, graduate student
Kyran Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) overcame a 2-1 deficit with a fall before dropping his semifinals match. In the consolation semifinals, Hagan secured a 7-5 decision before taking third after a medical forfeit. Graduate student
Alec Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) secured back-to-back decisions in the consolation bracket before advancing to the third-place match after a medical forfeit in the consolation semifinals. Virginia's Jarod Verkleeren took third place with an 8-4 decision and Hagan finished the day in fourth place.
Redshirt freshman
Peyten Kellar (Cutler, Ohio) opened the 157-pound Invitational bracket with a technical fall. After a quarterfinals loss, Kellar registered another technical fall and a 10-5 decision to advance to the third place match, where he won with an 8-0 major decision. In the 174-pound bracket, sophomore
Sal Perrine (Northfield, Ohio) was defeated in a tight quarterfinals match, bouncing back in the consolation bracket with three consecutive decisions to put him in the third-place match. Perrine secured third place with a fall, defeating Appalachian State's Brett Moredcai.
Sophomore
Zayne Lehman (Akron, Ohio) opened the 184-pound consolation bracket with a 10-0 major decision. He followed with two more narrow victories but was unable to comeback in the third-place bout, finishing third after a 6-4 loss. At 197 pounds, freshman
Austin Starr (Indian Creek, Ohio) pinned Gardner Webb's Sam Mora, but was defeated in the semifinals. After a consolation semifinals victory, he took third place with this second fall of the day.
In the Open division at 133 pounds, freshman
Paul Woo (Wheaton, Ill.) lost his first match-up of the day, but quickly advanced through the consolation bracket with a bye and a medical forfeit. Woo ultimately finished third with a narrow 3-1 decision.
At 157 pounds, Segura (Columbus, Ohio) opened with a 9-5 decision in the quarterfinals before winning his semifinals match with a 4-1 decision. He took first place with a 6-1 decision.
Up next, the Bobcats travel to Annapolis, Md. for the Navy Classic on Nov. 19.
