Ohio Volleyball Downs Ball State

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio volleyball team (18-9, 12-4 MAC) defeated Ball State (21-7, 13-3 MAC) in four sets (25-21, 24-26, 25-15, 25-17) and snapped the Cardinals 13-match winning streak on Friday (Nov. 11) in the first match of this weekend's series.Â
Ohio outhit Ball State .281 with 62 kills compared to Ball State's .156 with 42 kills. The Bobcats led in every other category as well, totaling 58 assists, 80 digs, and eight blocks. Â
Ohio established a competitive spirit, coming out with lots of energy in set one. The set began with both teams battling and not allowing the other to pull ahead. However, the Bobcats were able to string together an 11-2 run and forced Ball State to call their first timeout. Ohio continued to put the pressure on the Cardinals with the Bobcats taking a 10-point lead, forcing Ball State to regather. The Cardinals went on a slight run, but it was not enough as the Bobcats were able to close out the set 25-21.  Â
The second set was another back-and-forth battle with 18 ties and eight lead changes. The Bobcats went on a 7-2 run to put them up by three which was their biggest lead in set two. Set two was tied up at 24, setting up for an exciting finish. Despite its best efforts, Ohio fell short in set two, 26-24. Â
Set three started the same as sets one and two with eight early ties and neither team being able to expand their lead. The Bobcats tallied a 12-3 run, setting them up with a 20-13-point average. Ohio finished set three by scoring five of the last seven points, taking the set 25-15. Â
Ohio came out swinging in the fourth set looking to end the match. After an early tie, the Bobcats collected a 12-3 run, giving themselves a ten-point lead. Ball State tried to go on a run, but the Bobcats shut down their attempts to get back into the set. Ohio was able to go on another late run which gave them set four, 25-17. Â
The Bobcats were led by senior middle blocker Caitlin O'Farrell (Suwanee, Ga.) and her.423 hit percentage with a game-high 14 kills. Outside hitter Caroline Clippard (Cincinnati, Ohio) also totaled double digit kills with 11, while outside hitter Kristy Frank (Kyiv, Ukraine) recorded a .533 hit percentage with nine kills. Â
Libero Sam Steele (Omaha, Neb.) and outside hitter Olivia Margolies (Galena, Ohio) combined for 35 digs. Margolies recorded a double-double with her 11 kills and 16 digs. Senior setter Parker Kwiatkowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) also recorded a double-double with 28 assists and 13 digs. Junior defensive specialist Maci Watrous (Coppell, Texas) recorded 12 digs of her own while junior setter Tria McLean (Battle Creek, Neb.) neared a double-double with 26 assists and nine digs. Â
Up next, Ohio will host Ball State at 5:30 p.m. ET again tomorrow, looking for a series sweep. The match will be followed by Senior Day recognitions. Â
