
Ohio Field Hockey Falls to Ball State in Overtime

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ohio field hockey team (5-6, 1-3 MAC) returned to action on Friday afternoon (Oct. 7), falling to Mid-American Conference foe Ball State (6-5, 3-1 MAC), 2-1 in overtime.Â

Overall, Ohio outshot Ball State 17-9, with 11 shots on goal compared to the Cardinals' five. Ohio also recorded 10 corners to Ball State's three.Â

Individually, freshman Anouk Plaehn (Lower Saxony, Germany) led Ohio with a goal, three shots and two shots on goal. Junior Meela Kopp (Louisville, Ky.) added one assist with four shots and three shots on goal. Freshman Mijntje Ligtenberg registered four attempts with three on goal, while senior Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.) added four shots with two on goal. Sophomore Merle Kal (Haarlem, The Netherlands) added two shots with one on goal, while sophomore Noa Desmaretz (Antwerp, Belgium) added an assist.Â

In goal, graduate student Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) played all 67 minutes, allowing two goals and making three saves.Â

Ball State struck first in the 14th minute, taking a 1-0 lead late in the first quarter. The second quarter saw Ohio generate several chances; however, the Ball State keeper was able to preserve the Cardinals' lead, sending the game to half with the Bobcats trailing 1-0.Â

At the half, Ohio outshot Ball State 12-3, while the Bobcats had seven corners compared to Ball State's one.Â

After Ball State opened the third quarter generating offense, Ohio evened the score up in the 42nd minute on a goal from Plaehn, which was assisted by Koop and Desmaretz off a corner, tying the match at 1-1 with a quarter left to play.Â

After little action in the fourth quarter, the Bobcats and Ball State headed to overtime, where the Cardinals scored in the 68th minute to take the game, 2-1.Â

Up next, the Bobcats are back in Athens on Sunday, Oct. 9 when they host Ohio State. First touch is set for 1 p.m. at Pruitt Field.Â
