ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio Bobcats field hockey team (1-2) won its first game of the season in a 3-2 victory over Northeastern (0-4) on Saturday afternoon at Pruitt Field.
The Bobcats fell behind early after the Huskies were awarded a penalty stroke in the 15th minute. Ohio quickly responded with the first goal of the season scored by Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, MD) from a Sienna Sakich (Powell, Ohio) assist in the 19th minute.
Ohio broke the tie in the 37th minute when Leah Warren (Hamilton, New Zealand) sent the ball to the back of the net on a corner, assisted by graduate midfielder Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio).
"It's always really exciting to get a goal off a corner," Shive said. "We work really hard on those during practice, and we hope they are successful in the game. We try to find the spots that'll execute the best against these teams and yeah, that was just a hard strike from Leah, really good shot."
Ohio was outshot by Northeastern, 8-7, with four shots on goal compared to Northeastern's five. Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) and Macy Lotze (Louisville, KY) split time in the goal, each giving up one goal with Graner making one save and Lotze making two.
The Huskies tied the game in the 41st minute before Shive netted the game-winner and her first goal of the season in the 51st minute on a one-on-one with the Northeastern goalkeeper.
Quick passing was the key to opening up the Huskies' defense and create open shot opportunities on offense.
"They were really good at getting two or three people on the ball carrier at all times, so we just needed to get that ball off our sticks to our open player as fast as we could," Shive said.
The Bobcats face another challenge on Sunday (Sept. 5) against Michigan State at 1 p.m. The Spartans took on Northeastern on Friday and took a 3-0 win.
