AKRON, Ohio -- The Ohio baseball team (25-19, 16-15 MAC) split a pair of seven-inning games at Akron (13-32, 7-28 MAC) on Saturday (May 15). The Bobcats fell to the Zips, 3-1, in game one of the doubleheader but bounced back with a 4-0 win in the second game of the twin bill.
Game One: Akron 3, Ohio 1 (seven innings)
Akron plated all three of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held on for the victory.
Ohio scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth when redshirt senior shortstop Joe Weisenseel (Strongsville, Ohio) led off with a single to left and scored two outs later on a base hit to center by graduate student first baseman Harry Witwer-Dukes (Monmouth, Ore.).
Witwer-Dukes accounted for two of Ohio's four hits in the contest.
Game Two: Ohio 4, Akron 0 (seven innings)
The Bobcats bounced back with a shutout victory in game two of the doubleheader.
Ohio struck first in the top of the first as senior center fielder Isaiah Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.) scored on a two-out single to short by graduate student third baseman Trevor Hafner (Perrysburg, Ohio) after being hit by a pitch to lead off the contest.
The Bobcats added three more runs to its total in the top of the seventh to put the game away thanks to one swing of the bat by senior designated hitter Treyben Funderburg (Beavercreek, Ohio). After redshirt junior second baseman Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Md.) led off with a single up the middle and Peterson was hit by a pitch one out later, Funderburg came to the plate and belted a three-run home run to left to make it a 4-0 lead for Ohio.
The duo of senior right-handed starting pictcher Chace Harris (New Marshfield, Ohio) and senior southpaw closer Brett Manis (Port Huron, Mich.) got the job done on the mound to combine for the seven-inning shutout. Harris went 5.2 innings and stuck out six while allowing just two hits and two walks. Manis tossed 1.1 innings of relief in which he struck out two without surrendering a hit or a walk. Harris got the win to improve to 3-2 on the year while Manis notched his eighth save of the season.
Ohio will look to finish with a split of the four-game Mid-American Conference series against Akron when the two teams square off again on Sunday (May 16), with first pitch scheduled for noon ET.
