TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Ohio baseball team (11-10, 5-6 MAC) split a Saturday (April 3) doubleheader at Toledo (5-19, 3-8 MAC), winning game one by a score of 11- 6 but falling in game two, 6-5.
Game One: Ohio 11, Toledo 6
After posting a 13-2 win in the series opener on Friday (April 2), the Bobcats followed it up with a five-run victory in game one of the twin bill.
The Bobcats plated 11 runs on 13 hits and six walks, with Ohio's four hitters at the top of the order recording multi-hit efforts. Senior center fielder Isaiah Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.) went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, drew a walk and scored a run. Redshirt junior second baseman Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Md.) went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Graduate right fielder Harry Witwer-Dukes (Monmouth, Ore.) finished 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs while senior left fielder Sebastian Fabik (Lebanon, Ohio) logged a 2-for-5 effort that included a pair of solo home runs.
Ohio sent the tone in the top of the first inning, taking a quick 5-0 lead courtesy of four consecutive home runs. After Richardson logged the game's first hit with a one-out single up the middle, Witwer-Dukes, Fabik, graduate student third baseman Trevor Hafner (Perrysburg, Ohio) and junior catcher Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) followed with back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs.
The Bobcats' lead swelled to 6-0 in the second as Peterson hit a one-out double to right center and scored one out later on a base hit to center by Witwer-Dukes.
Toledo tallied runs in the third and fourth to trim Ohio's lead to four runs, but Ohio went back up by six in the fifth after plating a pair of runs. The Rockets countered by scoring pair of runs in the home half of the fifth, but Ohio outscored Toledo by a 3-2 count over the final two runs to secure the win. Fabik hit a one-out home run in the sixth, then Richardson delivered a two-RBI single with one out in the seventh.
Freshman right-handed starting pitcher Logan Jones (Canton, Ohio) earned the win on the mound to improve to 1-2 on the season, and senior right-handed reliever Edward Kutt IV (Westlake, Calif.) recorded his fourth save of the year.
Game Two: Toledo 6, Ohio 5
The Rockets plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win.
With the contest even at four-all in the top of the sixth, redshirt senior shortstop Joe Weisenseel (Strongsville, Ohio) scored on a wild pitch with two outs to give Ohio a 5-4 lead. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, Toledo countered with a pair of runs in the home half to earn the win.
Hafner and redshirt junior right fielder Spencer Harbert (Middletown, Del.) each homered for Ohio while Weisenseel recorded a pair of singles to lead Ohio at the plate.
Ohio will look to clinch the series win when it squares off against Toledo in the series finale on Sunday (April 4) at 1 p.m. ET.
