ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio soccer team (1-2, 1-2 MAC) earned its first win of the season, 3-0, over Akron (0-3, 0-3 MAC) on Sunday (March 14) at Peden Stadium. Junior Abby Townsend (Powell, Ohio) scored the Bobcats' first goal of the season as they went on to earn the three-goal shutout win.

Ohio started quickly when Townsend sent her shot towards the goal, which was redirected into the net by an Akron defender in the 22nd minute. The Bobcats lengthened the lead going into halftime when freshman Izzi Boyd (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored her first career goal by slotting it into the bottom left corner of the goal in the 41st minute.

"I was definitely happy to get a goal today because we've been working on trying to get it into the back of the net," Boyd said. "That was like a main focus this week, so I'm glad to finally execute it and I'm glad for my team."

Freshman Shae Robertson (Lexington, Ky) also scored her first career goal for Ohio when she put in a goal from the middle of the box.

The Bobcats' defense has been great this season, only allowing two goals so far. Sunday marked Ohio's first clean sheet of the season as it only allowed one shot all game.

"If you look back to 2019, the last time we played a full season, we scored a lot of goals, but I think we gave up a lot of goals," head coach Aaron Rodgers said. "We kind of wanted to work on eliminating goals and trying to be a little bit more solid defensively."

Ohio will be back on the road as it travels to Kent State (2-1, 2-1 MAC) on Thursday. First touch is set for 7 p.m. ET.
