OXFORD, Ohio – The Ohio volleyball team (10-16, 10-5, MAC) took down rival Miami (6-19, 4-11 MAC) for the second time this weekend on Saturday (Nov. 6) in Millett Hall.
This victory gave the Bobcats' their fourth straight win and clinched them a spot in the upcoming MAC Volleyball Championship.
Round two of the Battle of the Bricks was hard-fought, as the Bobcats and the RedHawks played to five sets. Ohio dropped set one after attacking at a mere .229 to Miami's .441. The next set was a completely different story for the RedHawks' offensive, hitting -.059 with only five kills. In the third, the Bobcats struggled from eight errors and allowed Miami a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set. Nonetheless, Ohio rallied back to secured the next two sets and defeated the RedHawks, 3-2 (18-25, 25-13, 17-25, 25-16, 17-15).
Freshman outside hitter
Caroline Clippard (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the match in kills (20), while also adding three block assists. Junior outside hitter
Olivia Margolies (Galena, Ohio) and fifth year opposite hitter
Maggie Nedoma (Brook Park, Ohio) followed with 14 and 12 kills. Additionally, sophomore setter
Tria McLean (Battle Creek, Neb.) was just shy of another double-double, tallying 53 assists and nine digs.
Defensively, sophomore liberos/defensive specialists
Sam Steele (Omaha, Neb.) and
Maci Watrous (Coppell, Texas) pocketed a total of 40 digs. Steele collected 29, while Watrous had 11. Steele also registered three aces along with junior defensive specialist
Ciara Livingway (Lake Orion, Mich.). Middle blockers
Caitlin O'Farrell (Suwanee, Ga.) and
Elizabeth Hoerlein (Mason, Ohio) were also key defenders in Saturday's match. O'Farrell added five block assists, while Hoerlein recorded Ohio's only two block solos and an additional two block assists.
Up next, Ohio will head back to the Convocation Center for their final home matches and Senior Day. The Bobcats will take on Bowling Green at 7 P.M. on Friday (Nov. 12) and at 2 P.M. on Saturday (Nov. 13).
