CLEVELAND – The Ohio swimming and diving team wrapped up competition at the 2021 Magnus Cup on Saturday (Nov. 20). The Bobcats finished the three-day event with 1,377.50 points, which placed them second overall.
"It was a phenomenal weekend for our team," head coach Mason Norman said. "Collectively the entire team has been preparing for this meet to see where we are with training. We have a lot to work with as we enter this training phase to prepare to go all in for February. The team is hungry and deserves the success we had this weekend."
The Bobcats began competition on Thursday with the 200-yard freestyle relay, with the Ohio squad coming in third with an overall time of 1:33.31.
Freshman
Julia Strine (Shippensburg, PA) competed in the 50-yard free 'A' final, finishing fourth overall in 29.35.
Junior
Emma Fortman (Madeira, Ohio) won the 500-yard freestyle, finishing the race in 4:54.63. Graduate student
Athena Aravantinou (North Bethesda, Md.) placed 6
th in the 'A' final, finishing in 5:00.22.
Sophomore
Gabrielle Brust (Granville, Ohio) wrapped up competition in the 200-yard IM 'A' final in third place, touching in at 2:01.65. Junior
McKenzie Grau (Mason, Ohio) finishing third in the 50 free (23.32), while the Bobcats' squad finishing in second place in the 400-yard medley relay, touching in at 3:42.50.
In diving, junior
Halli Siwik (Fishers, Ind.) finished the 3-meter event in third place with an overall score of 265. Junior
Sienna Breton (Cheshire, Conn.) placed seventh with a score of 217.65, while freshman
Grace Matocha (Magnolia, Texas) finished eighth with a score of 197.25.
On Friday, the Bobcats began the evening with the 200-yard medley relay squad finishing in fourth place with a time of 1:42.83.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Brust finished in fourth in the 'A' final with a time of 54.39. The Bobcats then finished in first and second place, respectively in the 200-yard freestyle 'A' final with Fortman finishing first in 1:49.16 and Grau finishing second in 1:49.28.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Strine wrapped up her 'A' final in third, touching in at 1:02.87.
The Bobcats finished the day with the 800-yard freestyle relay, with Ohio placing second overall in 7:26.19.
In diving, Siwik finished the 1-meter event in second place, finishing with an overall score of 259.95. Sophomore
Jordyn Miller (Latrobe, Pa.) finished sixth overall with a score of 222.0.
On Saturday, Brust finished in third place in the 50-yard butterfly, touching in at 24.81. She then returned for the 200-yard fly, finishing second overall in 2:01.68.
Also, in 200-yard fly, junior
Madeline Marks (Bentonville, Ark.) finished four, completing the race in 2:02.73. Meanwhile, graduate student
Kendra Sheehan (Bentonville, Ark.) finished sixth in the 50- fly with a time of 25.30.
Grau and Fortman finished the 100-yard freestyle in third and fourth place, respectively, with Grau finishing in 50.87 and Fortman in 51.01. Then in the 200-yard breaststroke, redshirt junior
Kelsey Morgan (Pickerington, Ohio) finished fourth in 2:17.33.
In the 1650-yard freestyle sophomore
Olivia Morlok (Columbus, Ind.) finished fifth overall in 17:06.86, while sophomore
Morgan Croaning (Carmel, Ind.) finished sixth in 17:09.73. Marks placed eighth, finishing in 17:16.28.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Bobcats squad wrapped up competition in second place, finishing in 3:23.27.
The Bobcats head into winter break and will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 7 when Ohio hosts Marshall. The event is set to start at 1 p.m. inside the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
