
Ohio Field Hockey Dominates Longwood, 5-2, on Senior Day

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio field hockey team (7-11, 4-3 MAC) wrapped up the 2021 regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30, dominating Longwood (9-6, 4-3 MAC), 5-2, inside Pruitt Field on Senior Day. The victory secured the Bobcats a spot in next week's 2021 Mid-American Conference Tournament.Â
The Bobcats will enter the MAC Tournament as the four seed and they will take on top-seed Miami on Friday, Nov. 5.

Prior to the game, the Bobcats honored seniors Ashley Willbur, Jillian Shive, Sydney Super and Courtney Klein.
"That was honestly incredible," head coach Ali Johnstone said. "On senior day, the energy, we had a ton of poeple in the crowd. What's most impressive was the pressure was on us. There was some serious pressure on our team, so it's hard to play with that and they played with heart, they played with effort. It was really fun."

The Bobcats struck early when Noa Desmaretz (Antwerp, Belgium) scored in the fourth minute off an assist from Kaelyn Long (Hanover, Pa.) to give Ohio a 1-0 lead early. The Bobcats continued to put the pressure on in the quarter, with Sienna Sakich (Powell, Ohio) scoring unassisted on a penalty corner to put the Bobcats up 2-0 after the first quarter.Â

The Bobcats added on in the second quarter when Meela Kopp (Louisville, Ky.) scored on a penalty shot to put Ohio up 3-0 early in the second quarter.Â

Ohio continued to add on in the second quarter, with Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio) scoring in the 23rd minute on an assist by Leah Warren. Shive got on the board again in the 26th minute on Ohio's second penalty shot of the game to put Ohio up 5-0 at the half.Â

At halftime, the Bobcats scored five goals on six shots, while Longwood did not score a goal on one shot.Â

Longwood got on the board in the opening minutes of the third quarter when Floor Schouten scored in the 32ndminute to cut the Ohio score to 5-1 after three full quarters. Longwood added a goal in the final minutes of the game; however the Bobcats would go on a secure the 5-2 victory.Â
"This one is huge for the overall team morale and it's a huge confidence booster," Shive said. "We know we can play like this and to finally, in the most important game of the season, to play like we know we can play. Now heading into the tournament coming off of this is just the best case scenario. We're all extremely hyped up and ready to keep working."

Overall, Ohio scored five goals on eight shots on goal, while Longwood scored two goals on nine shots on goal.Â

Individually, Shive added two goals, while Sakich, Kopp and Desmaretz all added goals for the Bobcats.Â

In net, Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) played all 60 minutes, allowing two goals and making six saves.Â
