MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Ohio softball team (10-14) wrapped up play at THE Spring Games on Sunday (March 8), splitting the day's action. Ohio opened the day falling to South Dakota State (13-7), 2-0, in game one, before defeating Merrimack (2-9), 6-0, in game two.
GAME ONE: South Dakota State 2, Ohio 0
Junior Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) led the game off with a single. Then with one out, junior Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) singled to put runners on first and second. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the first with the game still scoreless.
South Dakota State threatened in the bottom of the second inning, putting two runners on with two hits, however, the Bobcats defense was able to work out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.
After an uneventful few innings, Ohio's biggest threat came in the top of the fourth inning. Yun reached first on an error and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Yun then moved to third when sophomore Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) singled. Spacek then stop second, putting runners on second and third with one out. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the frame with it still scoreless.
South Dakota State struck in the bottom of the fourth inning taking a 2-0 lead on a two-out, two-run homerun. Ohio tried to get a run back in the top of the fifth inning when senior Alexa Holland (Rochester, Ind.) doubled. However, she was thrown out running to third. Freshman Molly Troutman (Gahanna, Ohio) then singled, but the Bobcats were unable to score, sending the game to the bottom of the inning, down 2-0.
SDSU threatened to add on in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading the bases. However, the Ohio defense was able to work out of the jam, keeping the deficit at 2-0 going into the sixth inning. The Bobcats picked up a baserunner in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) reached on an error. However, once again, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with the Bobcats trailing, 2-0.
After a scoreless bottom of the sixth for South Dakota State, Ohio was unable to generate any offense in the top of the seventh, falling 2-0.
Overall, did not score on five hits and did not commit an error, while South Dakota State scored two runs on six hits and committed two errors.
Individually, Holland had a double, while Englant, Yun, Spacek and Troutman all had base hits for the Bobcats.
In the circle, junior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out six.
GAME TWO: Ohio 6, Merrimack 0
After a scoreless first inning, the Bobcats struck in the top of the second inning on a solo homerun by junior Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) to take a 1-0 lead. Ohio added on in the top of the third inning. With one out, Englant singled and then stole second and third, setting up Yun for an RBI single to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead going to the bottom of the inning.
After a scoreless inning from Merrimack in the bottom of the third, Ohio added on in the top of the fourth inning. Spacek led the inning off with a single and moved to third with Troutman doubled. Spacek then scored when Holland grounded out, giving Ohio a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Ohio added on in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) doubled. After Fogue walked, Spacek then doubled to left center, scoring Dawe and Fogue to give Ohio a 5-0 lead going to the bottom of the fifth.
Ohio threatened to add on in the top of the sixth inning after freshman Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) doubled to right. However, the Bobcats were unable to add on, sending the game of the bottom of the inning with Ohio leading, 5-0.
Merrimack threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning getting two runners on, however the Ohio defense worked out of the jam, sending the game to the seventh with the Bobcats leading 5-0. The Bobcats added a run on in the top pf the seventh inning to take a 6-0 lead. Merrimack was unable to get offense going in the bottom of the frame, sealing the 6-0 victory for the Bobcats.
Ohio finished the game with six hits runs on 10 hits and did not commit and error, while Merrimack did not score a run on four hits.
Individually, Spacek finished the game with three hits, a double, two RBI and one run scored, while Yun finished the game with two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Englant finished the game with a run and a hit, while Dawe finished with a double and a run scored. Rice finished the game with a homerun, while Bernard wrapped up the game with a double.
In the circle, sophomore Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched seven innings, allowing no runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one.

Ohio heads to Clearwater, Fla. on Tuesday, March 10 for a double header against Cleveland State and Providence.
