CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Ohio softball team (11-15) continued play in Clearwater, Fla. this afternoon, splitting a doubleheader against Providence (6-10) and Cleveland State (7-9). Ohio defeated Providence, 2-1 in game one, before falling to Cleveland State, 6-1 in the second game.
GAME ONE: Ohio 2, Providence 1
Ohio threatened in the bottom of the first inning after junior Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) reached on an error. With one out, junior Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) singled to put runners on first and second. Both would move up a base on a ground out, however the Bobcats were unable to capitalize on the scoring chance, sending the game to the top of the second with it still scoreless.
After Providence went down in order in the top of the second, Ohio struck in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) reached when she was hit by a pitch. She then stole second and then scored on a two-out RBI single from senior Alexa Holland (Rochester, Ind.), giving Ohio a 1-0 lead after two innings of play.
Providence got their first baserunner in the top of the third inning on a one-out single. However, the Ohio offense worked out of the jam, sending the game to the bottom of the third with Ohio leading, 1-0.
Providence struck in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1-1 going to the fifth inning.
Ohio struck again in the top of the six thinning. Sophomore Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a ground out. Then with two outs, freshman Molly Troutman (Gahanna, Ohio) singled to center, scoring Fogue and putting Ohio up 2-1.
Providence was unable to get any offense going in the top of the seventh inning, sealing the 2-1 victory for the Bobcats.
Overall, Ohio scored two runs on five hits and did not commit an error, while Providence scored one run on three hits and committed one error.
Individually, Yun, Fogue, Troutman, junior Ava Heidorn (Marysville, Ohio) and Holland all recorded hits for Ohio.
Starting pitcher Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) got the start, pitching seven innings, allowing one run on three hits while not walking a batter and striking out five.
GAME TWO: Cleveland State 6, Ohio 1
Cleveland State threatened first in the top of the first inning when two batters walked. However, the Bobcats were able to work out of the inning, sending the game to the second with the game still scoreless.
In the top of the second, Ohio get the first hit of the game, a leadoff single from Fogue. However, the Bobcats were unable to score, sending the game to the third with it still scoreless. The Bobcats struck in the top of the third inning. Heidorn led the inning off with a single to center. With one out, Englant drew a walk, putting runners on first and third. Yun then flew out, allowing Heidorn to score from third, giving Ohio a 1-0.
Cleveland State got the run back in the bottom of the third inning, tying the game at 1-1 going into the fourth inning. CSU added on in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring five runs, four of them on a grand slam, taking a 6-1 lead into the fifth inning.
Ohio threatened to get some runs back in the top of the fifth inning. Holland led the inning off with a single. She then moved to second on a ground out and then third with Spacek singled. Spacek then advanced to second, putting runners on second and third with one out. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with the Bobcats trailing, 6-1.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Ohio attempted to rally in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Englant doubled, however Ohio was unable to score, sealing the 6-1 victory for the Vikings.
Overall, Ohio scored one run on seven hits and committed on error, while CSU scored six runs on eight hits and did not commit an error.
Individually, Spacek recorded two hits, while Englant registered a double. Fogue, junior Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio), Heidorn and Holland all recorded hits for Ohio.
In the circle, junior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) pitched 1.1 innings and did not allow a run on no hits, while walking two and striking out one. Redshirt sophomore Baylie Thornhill (Baton Rouge, La.) pitched 2.1 innings and allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits, while walking one and striking out three. Freshman Holly Brehm (Mullens, W.Va.) pitched 2.1 innings and did not allow a run on one hit.

Ohio heads to Tampa, Fla. for the USF Tournament March 13-15 where Ohio will take on USF, Iowa and Southeast Missouri State.
