Ohio Softball Splits Second Day at Charleston Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. –  The Ohio softball team (5-9) wrapped up the second day of the Charleston Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 22), splitting the day's competition. The Bobcats fell to Dartmouth in the first game of the day, 6-4, before defeating Charleston Southern, 8-2 in the final game of the night. 

GAME ONE: Dartmouth 6, Ohio 4
The Bobcats struck first in the top of the first inning. After junior Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) led the game off with a double, junior Ava Heidorn (Marysville, Ohio) then singled to center, scoring Englant and putting the Bobcats up, 1-0. 

Dartmouth responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on three hits and one error to take a 2-1 lead going into the top of the second inning.  

After a scoreless second inning from both teams, Ohio threatened in the top of the third inning. Senior Alexa Holland (Rochester, Ind.) walked and then moved to second when Englant reached on an error. However, the Bobcats were unable to get a run across, sending the game to the bottom of the inning trailing, 2-1. However, Dartmouth added a run in the bottom of the frame, taking a 3-1 lead going into the fourth inning. 

The Bobcats responded in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, sophomore Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) singled to left. Fogue moved to third on a double to leftfield by sophomore Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas). Fogue then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio), to cut the Dartmouth lead to 3-2. Moments later, Holland singled to left, scoring Spacek and tying the game at 3-3 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. 

Dartmouth threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning. After getting runners on first and second with one out, the Bobcats' defense turned a double play to end the threat, sending the game to the top of the fifth tied at 3-3. 

Ohio threatened in the top of the fifth inning. After junior Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) reached on an error, Heidorn singled to left, putting runners on first and second with no outs. However, the Dartmouth defense was able to work out of the jam, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with it tied at 3-3. 

Dartmouth retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a leadoff homerun, giving them a 4-3 lead going into the top of the sixth inning. 

Ohio threatened to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Englant reached on a fielder's choice. She then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif) drew a walk and then stole second. However, the Bobcats were unable to score, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with Ohio trailing, 4-3. 

Dartmouth took a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on two hits.  

In the top of the seventh inning, the Bobcats attempted to mount a rally. With two outs, Fogue tripled to left field, sending up Spacek bringing her home on a single to center. However, that was the only run the Bobcats were to get in the innings, falling to Dartmouth, 6-4. 

Overall, Ohio scored four runs on 10 hits and committed five errors, while Dartmouth scored six runs on 11 hits and committed two errors. 

Overall, Englant went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Heidorn added two hits and an RBI. Fogue went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, while Holland added two hits and an RBI. Spacek added two hits, a double, RBI and one run scored. 

In the circle, sophomore Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) got the start, pitching 0.2 innings, allowing two runs, none earned, on three hits. Freshman Holly Brehm (Mullens, W. Va.) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on eight hits while walking one and striking out two. 

GAME TWO: Ohio 8, Charleston Southern 2
Ohio struck first in the top of the first inning. Englant led the game off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a single from Dawe. After Yun reached on a fielder's choice, Spacek reached moments later on an error, scoring Englant and Yun. Rice then singled to center, however, Ohio was unable to score more, taking a 2-0 lead to the bottom of the first inning. 

After CSU went down in order in the bottom of the inning, Ohio threatened to add on in the top of the second. Freshman Molly Troutman (Gahanna, Ohio) singled to lead off the inning and then two outs later, Dawe drew a walk. Yun then singled to load the bases, however, the Bobcats were unable to score, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with the Bobcats still leading, 2-0. 

Ohio added on in the top of the third inning. Spacek singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Then with one out, Spacek scored on a throwing error, putting Ohio up 3-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. 

Charleston Southern got one run back in the bottom of the third inning, scoring a run on two hits and cutting the Ohio lead to 3-1 after three innings. The Bobcats responded in the top of the fourth inning. Englant tripled to lead off the inning and then scored on a one-out double from Yun, putting Ohio up, 4-1 going to the bottom of the fourth inning. 

CSU got the run back in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-out RBI triple. However, the Bobcats were able to work out of the remainder of the inning, sending the game to the top of the fifth inning with the Bobcats leading, 4-2. The Bobcats added on in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Troutman tripled down the right field line. Sophie Bernard (Canton, Ohio) then entered the game to pinch hit and reached on an error, scoring Troutman and putting Ohio up, 5-2 going to the bottom of the fifth. 

After a scoreless bottom of the fifth inning for Charleston Southern, Ohio attempted to add on in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Heidorn singled and then moved to second when Spacek reached on an error. However, the Bobcats were unable to score, sending the game to the bottom of the frame with the Bobcats leading, 5-2. 

Charleston Southern attempted to rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, loading the bases with no outs. Redshirt sophomore Baylie Thornhill (Baton Rouge, La.) then entered the game and got the next batter to fly out, the next to hit into a fielder's choice and the final batter of the inning to ground out, sending the game to the top of the seventh inning with the Bobcats still leading. 5-2. 

Ohio added on in the top of the seventh inning. Foge led off with a walk and then moved to second on a single from Holland. With one out, Englant singled to center, scoring Fogue. After the single from Englant, Dawe crushed a double to right center, scoring Holland and Englant and giving Ohio an 8-2 lead going to the final frame. 

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bobcats sent Charleston Southern down in order, sealing the 8-2 victory. 

Overall, Ohio scored eight runs on 14 hits and did not commit an error, while Charleston Southern scored two runs on seven hits and committed five errors. 

Individually, Englant finished the day 3-for-4 with one triple, one RBI and three runs scored, Dawe finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Yun finished with two hits, one double, one RBI and one run scored. Rice finished with two hits, while Spacek finished with one hit, two RBI and one run scored, while Troutman finished with two hits, one triple and a run scored, while Holland wrapped up the day with a hit and a run scored. 

In the circle, junior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) got the start and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two. Thornhill entered the game and pitched two innings, allowing no runs and did not allow a hit, while striking out one.

The Bobcats wrap up play at the 2020 Charleston Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 23 when the Bobcats take on Appalachian State. First pitch is set for 11:15 a.m.
