CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Thanks to a clutch homerun by junior Katie Yun in the top of the 15th inning, the Ohio softball team (2-8) wrapped up play at the 2020 Chattanooga Challenge on Sunday (Feb. 16), outlasting Lipscomb (5-3), 3-2, in 15 innings.
After a scoreless first inning, the Bobcats recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the second inning when junior Ava Heidorn (Marysville, Ohio) tripled down the right field line. However, the Bobcats were unable to score, sending the game to the bottom of the frame with the game still scoreless.
After starting pitcher freshman Holly Brehm (Mullens, W. Va.) and the Bobcats' defense strung together five scoreless innings, the Bobcats finally struck in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, senior Alexa Holland (Rochester, Ind.) singled to left and then moved to second when junior Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) reached on an error. Moments later, freshman Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) singled to center, scoring Holland and giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Lipscomb responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on a two-out single up the middle, putting Lipscomb up 2-1 going to the top of the seventh inning.
The Bobcats responded in the top of the inning, Heidorn singled to left to lead off the inning and then moved to second when freshman Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) drew a walk, putting runners on first and second with one out. Sophomore Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) then entered the game to pinch hit, coming in clutch by roping a double to left center, scoring sophomore Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas), who re-entered the game to run for Bernard, tying the game at 2-2 going to the bottom of the frame.
Lipscomb threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, loading the bases with no outs. However, Brehm and the Bobcats' defense worked their way out of the jam, sending the game to extra innings tied at 2-2.
The biggest threat in extra innings came in the bottom of the 10th inning when Lipscomb registered two bases runners, however the Ohio defense once again worked out of the jam, sending the game to the 11th inning tied at 2-2.
After quick innings from both teams, the Bobcats finally struck in the top of the 15th inning, with two outs, Yun crushed a solo homerun to right center, giving Ohio a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the 15th inning.
Lipscomb threatened in the bottom of the inning with a two-out double. However, Brehm get the final batter of the game to fly out, sealing the 15-inning, 3-2 victory for the Bobcats.
Overall, Ohio scored three runs on 12 hits and committed one error, while Lipscomb scored two runs on 17 hits while committing one error.
Leading the Bobcats at the plate was Heidorn who went 3-for-7 with a triple and a run scored. Englant finished 2-for-7, while Dawe finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. Yun finished with one hit, the game-winning homerun, while Spacek finished with two hits. Fogue finished the game with a pinch-hit double and an RBI, while Holland registered a hit and a run scored.
In the circle, Brehm pitched all 15 innings, allowing two runs on 17 hits, while walking three and striking out three.
Up next, the Bobcats head to Charleston, S.C. for the 2020 Charleston Invitational Feb. 20-23. While there, Ohio will take on Army, N.C. Central, Dartmouth, Charleston Southern and Appalachian State.
