ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio women's basketball team (16-7, 9-3 MAC) won its third-straight game after defeating Miami (11-14, 4-9 MAC), 84-70, on Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall.
"I thought at times we were really good today," head coach Bob Boldon said. "There was a 10 minute stretch at the end of the first quarter and into the second quarter where Miami scored nine points over 10 minutes. We had that type of defense over a couple of stretches. I'd like to see that extended a bit more but I was really pleased with our effort today."
Ohio was led by redshirt sophomore guard Erica Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio), who had 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Johnson was 8-of-20 from the field and 4-of-9 from the three-point line. Johnson was +16 in 37 minutes on the floor.
Redshirt junior guard Katie Barker (Cary, Ill.) knocked down five threes and scored 15 points. Barker had three assists and two rebounds after going 5-of-10 from deep.
Junior guard Amani Burke (Columbus, Ohio) had 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting with two made threes. Burke was +23 on the floor in 34 minutes.
Junior forward Gabby Burris (Baltimore, Ohio) and junior guard Cece Hooks (Dayton, Ohio) had 13 points each. Hooks was 5-of-8 from the field while Burris went 5-of-12 with two made threes.
Overall, Ohio was 31-of-68 (45.6 percent) from the field and 13-of-30 (45.3 percent) from the three-point line. Ohio held Miami to 25-of-62 (40.3 percent) shooting and 11-of-30 (36.7 percent) from deep. Ohio was 9-of-15 (60.0 percent) from the free-throw line while Miami was 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from the charity stripe.
OU was outrebounded by Miami, 39-38. Ohio pulled in 12 offensive rebounds. Johnson led the way eight, while Burris and sophomore forward Edecia Beck (Grand Rapids, Mich.) had five. Burke had four boards while nine players pulled down at least one.
Ohio forced 19 turnovers and turned the ball over 15 times. Hooks had six steals while Burris and Burke had two each.
The Bobcats started the game up 29-16 after a hot-shooting first quarter where the Bobcats were 10-of-18 from the field and 5-of-9 from deep. Barker hit three three-pointers for a team-high nine points while Burke had seven. Beck had all six of her points in the frame. Miami took the lead at 9-6, their last lead of the game. Burke tied the game at 6:51 and then gave OU the advantage with 6:01 remaining. Ohio pushed the lead to 22-13 on another Burke layup and four-straight points from Johnson gave Ohio a 29-16 lead.
OU pushed the lead to 48-29 after outscoring the Redhawks 19-13 in the second quarter. Johnson poured in 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting with three from deep while Burke had five. Overall, Ohio was 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from the field and 4-of-10 (40.0 percent) from deep. Ohio's largest lead of the half was 40-19 when burke hit a trey with 4:43 remaining in the half.
The Bobcats pushed its lead once again in the third quarter when they outscored Miami, 21-14. Barker had six points for Ohio while Johnson had five. OU started the frame on an 11-0 run capped by a Johnson triple. Ohio was able to get the lead to 30 on a Johnson layup with 1:50 remaining, its largest lead of the night and ended the third quarter up 69-43.
Miami outscored Ohio 27-15 in the final quarter. The Redhawks were able to get the Ohio lead down to 12 with 5:27 left but Ohio answered with a 5-0 run capped by a Hooks layup to push the advantage back to 17 with 4:15 to play. Ohio won the game, 84-70.
Ohio will continue Mid-American Conference play at home on Wednesday against Toledo. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
