Ohio Women's Basketball Takes Down Bowling Green, 79-69

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio women's basketball team (12-6, 5-2 MAC) took down Bowling Green (8-11, 1-6 MAC), 79-69, on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

Ohio was led by junior guard Cece Hooks (Dayton, Ohio), who had 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Hooks was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line and hit one three-pointer. Hooks added eight rebounds, seven assists, three steals and a block.

"It's incredible what her ceiling is," head coach Bob Boldon said. "The amount of things we ask her to do would be overwhelming to most kids. The 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting would be enough and then you add rebounds and assists with three steals."

Redshirt junior Erica Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio) had 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Johnson was 5-of-8 from the three-point line and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Johnson pulled down six rebounds and added one assist in 28 minutes on the court.

"They're (Cece Hooks and Erica Johnson) are playing great basketball right now," Boldon added. "They were both spectacular again today. They're incredibly efficient."

Junior forward Gabby Burris (Baltimore, Ohio) had nine points and pulled three rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Katie Barker (Cary, Ill.) had eight points and made two threes while senior guard Amani Burke (Columbus, Ohio) had four points.

Overall, Ohio shot 30-of-61 (49.2 percent) from the field and 10-of-32 (31.3 percent) from the three-point line. Bowling Green was 23-of-50 (46.0 percent) from the field and 9-of-27 (33.3 percent) from the three-point line.

Bowling Green outrebounded Ohio, 35-26. Hooks led Ohio with seven boards while Johnson had six. Burris, Barker and Burke all had three while redshirt sophomore guard Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio) had two.

Ohio forced 22 turnovers and recorded 13 steals. Barker had four steals while Hooks and Burke each had three. Ohio scored 22 points off of turnovers.

The Bobcats scored 40 points in the paint and had nine points off of fast breaks.

Ohio started the game on a 9-0 run that lasted the first 3:49 of the quarter. BGSU stopped the run with a three. Ohio answered with a Johnson triple and ended up extending the lead to 19-4 after a Hooks layup. BG cut the lead to 10 but Ohio ended the quarter with a freshman guard Peyton Guice (Westerville, Ohio) layup and a Barker pull-up jumper to end the quarter up 23-9.

Bowling Green started the second quarter with a basket and Beck answered with a layup. BG chipped away and got the Ohio lead down 32-25 but Ohio hit a layup, two Hooks free throws and a Barker three to push the advantage back up to 41-28. Ohio ended the half up 13 after a buzzer-beating layup on a fast break from Hooks. BGSU outscored Ohio 23-22 in the half.

Ohio shot 18-of-34 (47.4 percent) and 3-of-9 (52.9 percent) from deep in the first half. Johnson had 12 points while Hooks had 10. Hooks also recorded seven assists in the first half.

BGSU went on a 9-2 run to start the quarter and cut the Ohio lead to 47-43. The Bobcats answered with a 6-0 run of their own capped by a Hooks layup off a steal to push the OU advantage to 53-43. Ohio hit a three with 3:20 from Johnson to go up 60-45 and ended the quarter with two free throws from Hooks to go up 65-51.

The Falcons got the lead down to eight with 5:36 left in the quarter at 68-60. Kroll then hit a three to put OU up 11 with 5:24 remaining. BG was able to get the lead down 71-64, but that was the closest they would come. Ohio pulled away and won, 79-69.

Ohio was 13-of-29 (48.3 percent) and 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) from deep. Hooks led the way with 15 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting while Johnson had 10 points.

The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Tip-off inside the Convo is set for 7 p.m.
