Ohio Soccer Defeats Youngstown State, 6-1, in Exhibition

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio– The Ohio soccer team saw the pitch for the first time in 2019, defeating Youngstown State, 6-1, Friday evening (Aug. 16) in an exhibition match at Farmers National Bank Field in Youngstown, Ohio. The Bobcats were led by freshman Maddie Young who scored three goals for Ohio. 

Ohio would strike early, scoring in the ninth minute off a goal from junior Sarina Dirrig (Powell, Ohio) and an assist from senior Alivia Milesky (Plain City, Ohio). Ohio would strike about 10 minutes later with an unassisted goal from sophomore Abby Townsend (Powell, Ohio), putting Ohio up 2-0 at the midway mark of the first half. 

Ohio would score two more time before halftime, with Young (Cincinnati, Ohio) scoring off an assist from Townsend in the 39th minute. Two minutes later, Young would score again, this time from a ball from fellow freshman, Olivia Page (Springboro, Ohio), helping send Ohio to the half with a 4-0 lead. 

Young would get her third goal of the game in the 52nd minute with the help of sophomore Taylor Dickerson (Cincinnati, Ohio), giving Ohio the 5-0 lead. The Bobcats final goal of the game would come in the 62nd minute, with sophomore Maeve Maloney (Lebanon, Ohio) getting on the score sheet, helping the Bobcats take a late 6-0 lead. 

The Penguins would get their lone goal of the game in the 75th minute when Addie Roman would score an unassisted goal. Neither team would add on over the remaining 15 minutes, giving Ohio the 6-1 victory. 

Overall, Ohio scored six goals and four assists on 29 shots, with 16 of them on goal. Meanwhile, Youngstown State scored one goal on eight shots with two on goal. 

The Bobcats were led by Young who scored three goals on four attempts. Milesky also recorded four shots with one assist, while Page also registered four shots as well as one assist. Dirrig recorded a goal on two shots, while Townsend registered a goal and an assist on two attempts. Overall, the Bobcats saw 13 players record shots. 

In goal, junior Sydney Malham (Nashville, Tenn.) got the start, playing 45 minutes while did not allowing a goal or recording a save. Sophomore Sam Wexell (Irwin, Pa.) played 37 minutes, allowing one goal and making one save, while freshman Reese Dorsey (Howard, Ohio) played seven minutes and did not allow a goal or record a save. 

Up next, Ohio opens the 2019 regular season on Thursday, Aug. 22 when the Bobcats host Eastern Kentucky. First touch is set for 4 p.m. at Chessa Field.
