OXFORD, Ohio -- The Ohio field hockey team (8-8, 4-2) falls to Appalachian State, 5-4 in overtime, in the Quarterfinals of the 2019 Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Championship.

The Bobcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio) scored in front of the Appalachian State net, assisted by redshirt senior Kendall Ballard (Charlottesville, Va.). After the Moutaineers tied it up, Ballard scored one of her own to put Ohio up, 2-1. Then,  with just less than five minutes left in the second quarter, Ballard scored on a penalty stroke to put the Bobcats up two goals.

At the half, Appalachian State had made a run of its own to tie the match at three goals apiece. After a quiet third quarter, junior Emma Spinetto (Louisville, Ky.) scored off of her own rebound to put Ohio in the lead once again. After the Mountaineers answered again, and some key saves from both goalkeepers, the MAC Quarterfinal match went to overtime.

Just over four minutes into the first overtime period, the Mountaineers scored the go-ahead-goal to move themselves on to the semifinals.

Overall, Ohio outshot Appalachian State, 26-12, and won the penalty corner battle, 10-4.

This will conclude the 2019 campaign for Ohio field hockey.
